Flashlite #110

Willie NileFirst of all, let me say hi to all the listeners from Kragujevac. There is a brand new radio station over there called Radio Centar 987 and starting from today, they will broadcast The Little Lighthouse every Thursday from 10pm (Central European Time). Kragujevac, welcome to the show! Today we have three new albums. We don’t have English bands on the show as often as some other shows and podcasts, but today we have two of them. British Sea Power is a name that brings Brit pop associations, but their sound somewhat stiffer over all, especially on the opening song of their new album called Valhalla Dancehall. London band Singing Loins however is as far from the Brit pop as you can be (which is a compliment of course!) and they have a new album too called Stuff. Third new album for this week is The Innocent Ones by the legendary New York outsider Willie Nile. We also represent one new band today. Their name is The Plastic Pals and they come from Sweden. Apparently, they belong to a movement called paisley vikings, and the syntagm sounds great and brings great associations, but I wish I knew more of the bands from the movement.

Flashlite #108 – 10 Years of The Little Lighthouse

10 YearsExactly 10 years ago, on this day, I broadcasted the very first The Little Lighthouse. At the time, it was a two-hour radio show on college radio station KLSU. With the second show, on January 27th, The Little Lighthouse also got a website and became one of the first podcasts ever on Internet, before the evil corporation Apple even coined the term, before the first mp3 players became a household item. But more importantly, this show became a vent for me to enjoy and understand new and old music in a new, exciting way. Starting with today’s show, and further in 2011, I will try to recall highlights of the first season as it was unrolling. I am alsoo very happy to announce that The Little Lighthouse will from now on be syndicated at another radio station, in addition to Radio SC in Zagreb: it’s the brand new radio station in Kragujevac, Serbia called Radio Centar 987. These guys are setting up their antenna as we speak, so I will let you all know more details when the regular program starts. In today’s show we hear some of the highlights from the very first show. Also, we have a brand new cd by Tom Getter Slack, who was one of the stars of the first seasons. This is his first album in ten years. But, in the first half of the show, we review the best singles, eps and other short form records and the best reissues of 2010. Happy birthday to The Little Lighthouse!

25 Years of “Tajanstveni voz”

On November 6 1985, exactly 25 years ago, one tradition started to take shape. Zikica Simic in Belgrade (Yugoslavia), decided to start a radio show featuring “the new American rock music” called Tajanstveni voz (Mystery Train). Zikica was featuring bands of the 80s rock’n’roll scene that was impossible to hear anywhere in the world except on college radio stations in the USA. He recognized the respect that these bands had for traditional rock’n’roll and persistently for the next 25 years (and hopefully more) he followed this musical genre as it transformed throughout the years: Husker Du, Green On Red, Violent Femmes, Giant Sand, Tav Falco then a new injection of power with Uncle Tupelo in the nineties and now with Endless Boogie, Phosphorescent, Black Keys and Kurt Vile. He introduced a small army of listeners to the true rock’n’roll sound, including myself. To be perfectly honest, influence of Zikica’s radio show is so enormous on me, that I can easily say how Little Lighthouse is a pale copy of Mystery Train, and still consider it an understatement and a compliment to my show. In the latest installment of his show, Zikica Simic re-played his very first playlist and also threw in a few songs from todays moment in between. A great way to mark quarter of a century of one helluva show.

Playlist 25 years ago…

Beat Farmers – Bigger Stones

X – What’s Wrong With Me
Minutemen – Cheerleaders
