Today we have some cool new singles by well known bands: legendary Godfathers and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. We introduced Zig Zags earlier this year and now they’re back with an EP. Mark Lanegan released an old set of demos dating back to 2002, which really sound exceptionally good. We introduce two new solo artists: Andy Gabbard from Columbus (also in Buffalo Killers) and Bill Lloyd from Nashville. From Macedonia comes Fonija, a punk trio with young folks belting out some impressive tunes.

When Mick Jagger was in his late forties he recorded Primitive Cool and Steel Wheels. Certainly not the highest point of his career. But, it seems that the generation of musicians who are in their late forties these days are growing up a bit slower, putting better and better records as the time goes by. Examples are many – Nick Saloman from Bevis Frond, Matthew Smith from Outrageous Cherry, Rich Hopkins… The heroes of this story, Doug Gillard and John Petkovic are in that group.
Last year a surprisingly uncharacteristic album came from Lydia Lunch. She and her collaborator, guitarist Cypress Grove recorded a mighty fine, moody, rock’n’roll album called appropriately A Fistful of Desert Blues. Rarely does a record title fit the sound so well. It’s a western desert blues record that can stand next to any Gun Club record and live up to it.
We have some hot reissues this time from the Numero Group. As a continuation of their Nikki Sudden reissues, we also now have the first Jacobites reissues, the first lp and Robespierre’s Velvet Basement. Another hot reissue on the same label is Texan hard rock band Josefus with their 1970 loud masterpiece Dead Man. We also have some interesting new records. Brian Olive, who used to be with The Greenhornes and Soledad Brothers, now has a new EP called Move. We introduce The Ugly Beats from Austin TX and Rat Columns for the first time at The Little Lighthouse. Rock’n’roll megastars J Mascis and Ty Segall have new records each and Mark Lanegan had put out the new EP as an advance for the upcoming new record in the Fall this year.
In today’s show we have the new music from the hard rock band Radio Moscow from Iowa and we introduce the new band from the Medway area, The Galileo 7. John Hiatt is back with an excellent new algum called Terms of My Surrender. Also, Mark Lanegan is preparing a new record with his band, and as an advance, a new single and a live recording came out recently. Janiva Magness is an excellent blues rock singer who just recently decided to make an album of original material for her own label. In some ways, this is her most personal album ever, titled simply Original. Also, we jump to the letter “W” in our regular segment called Blues Alphabet because the news comes to us that Johnny Winter passed away on July 16 this year.
Some sweet new americana today, or maybe it’s better to call it roots rock, since americana is really a worn out term these days. Neko Case has a new record, as well as her bandmate from the Blacky Ranchette project, Richard Buckner. Mark Lanegan is back as well with a new record consisting entirely of covers aptly called Imitations. Let’s not forget the cow punk legends Hickoids from Austin who recently gave us two new records, one a cover record called Kicking It With The Twits and also Hairy Charin’ Ape Suit that contains new songs. Finally Dickinson brothers have a new record with the North Mississippi Allstars, called World Boogi Is Coming, which were one of the last words of their father Jim before he died. The record contains a new version of Brownsville with Sid Selvidge who recently passed away and who many years ago sang this tune also with Jim in Mud Boy and The Neutrons.
Today we have two big comebacks. Mudhoney are back with the new album Vanishing Point after five years and Godfathers are back after 18 years wutg a new record Jukebox Fury. We also present the Rain, a new name from Norway, a trio obsessed with The Beatles. Another new name today is Purling Hiss from Philadelphia. We also have announcements for new records from Thalia Zedek (ex Come) and Michael Tarbox (ex Tarbox Ramblers). Mark Lanegan joined forces with London based musician Duke Garwood on a new record called Black Pudding.
Lots of new stuff this time. Let’s begin first with the familiar names. We have two new songs for the two main members of The dB’s. Chris Stamey has a new album and Peter Holsapple submitted a track to the Bobby Sutliff benefit. Two friends from the old UK rock’n’roll scene, Van Morrison and Georgie Fame each recently had new records, so we check that out. Mark Lanegan also appeared on a tribute, this one was for Tim Hardin. Legendary controversial music producer and musician from New York City, Kramer, covered a whole bunch of Brill Building era songs. Of the newbies, we have Brian Lisik from Canton OH, Hot Nun from San Francisco. Veronica Falls from England have a very aggressive advertising campaign for their new record Waiting For Something To Happen, but it’s still a very nice record and we get to hear a song from it.
Today’s spotlight is on the neo-acoustic music scene in former Yugoslavia. There was a huge folk movement also known over there as akusticari in the early to mid seventies. It seems as that scene is being revived. We already presented Belgrade’s On Tour some time ago, and today we have two more new names. Irena Žilić is a young singer songwriter from Zagreb with her modern and fresh take on western folk music. Nina Romić, also from Zagreb, is on the other hand more rooted in the local folklore. In this episode, she covers a song written originally by Satan Panonski – a hard blood shock punk from the eighties who was both influential and controversial at the same time. Nina’s cover is a part of a larger tribute called OÄi u magli. We also have a new album by our old friends from Rijeka My Buddy Moose. Their style is more on the roots rock side. Their new album Shine Shine Shine is produced by Chris Eckman from The Walkabouts, who also lives in that neck of the woods these days – Ljubljana. The Walkabouts have a live album called Berlin and we check that out as well in this show. Elsewhere form Europe, Amsterdam, we have an instrumental outfit called Bevel Emboss who create a wonderful tapestry of guitar sounds on their new album called Celluloid. Back to America – we have Arbouretum from Baltimore for the first time and super-group Sweet Apple have a new single out there which announces their album due this Spring around the Record Store Day. Mark Lanegan is a guest vocalist!
This show is dominated by several new names today. First, we have the Connection – a power pop band from Portsmouth, NH. They are joined by Wyatt Funderbunk as a guest, who we also have for the first time. Then we have the Black Oil Brothers, an interesting unpretentious mixture of traditional blues and other types of art. For instance, on their site you can download a nice story of a struggling painter. Another new name are the Australian band The Murlocks. We also have some good old friends here with new music. Singing Loins are about to put out the new record called Here on Earth and David Eugene Edwards is back with another Woven Hand release. Nick Cave invited Mark Lanegan to sing on the soundtrack for the movie that he wrote Lawless.
