Flashlite #411 – The Best Albums in 2016 (Part One)

Best of 2015We start today with the countdown to my list of favorite albums in 2016. Today we cover positions 35-14. It doesn’t mean that these any worse than the ones we will put in top 13, it’s just a matter of personal taste. This year was not an easy one, but it brought us some records that will stay with us for many years I think. Some of the old friends returned (Ray Mason, Descendents, Westerberg, Jonathan Richman, Javier Escovedo and Apache) and there are a few records from what used to be Yugoslavia (Bernays Propaganda, Thee Melomen, Erotic Biljan). Sweet AppleWelcome to our first regular show in 2014. After several shows in which we had a year-end review, new records piled up so today’s show is filled with new stuff. We start off with the brand new tune for Games, who we just pronounced as the band with the best record in 2013. We also use this opportunity to learn about some previous bands for Jeremy and Dave in Games. Then we check out the new Apache tune. They have a new single. First Base come from Toronto and they just released a fun debut record on Hozac. We check them out as well. Then we have a relatively new tribute that Ben Deily and his Varsity Drag performed in honor of Wiz (ex Mega City Four and Ipanema). We continue with an exclusive new track from Sweet Apple which is scheduled to appear on their upcoming album Golden Age of Glitter. It sounds a bit like Suicide, so we check out another song that also sounds like Suicide, by a new band Dreamsalon from Seattle. Chris Eckman also has a new record called Harney County. We also check out Rainy Day Saints live in Cleveland. I read in Sanjin Strbac book Token For The Favorite Wurlitzer a quote from Zikica Simic that there’s not enough appreciation for blues these days. So I decided to feature one blues musician that I admire in each new show in alphabetical order. So, in our new regular segment Blues Alphabet, we hear Pink Anderson. Finally, we pay a special tribute to Dick Dodd (ex Standells) and Phil Everly, of The Everly Brothers. Both of them died recently.

The Beach Boys – California Girls;
Games – Little Elsie;
Busy Signals – Got It All Wrong;
Ex Humans – Emergency;
Apache – Faster Louder;
Apache – Civil Disobedience;
First Base – Don’t Let Me Down (This Summer);
Ipanema – White Cat In A Snowstorm;
Varsity Drag – White Cat in a Snowstorm;
Rainy Day Saints – You Can’t Escape (Live in CLE);
Sweet Apple – Hold Me I’m Dying;
Sweet Apple – Another Desert Skyway;
Dreamsalon – In The Air;
Suicide – Suicide – Ghost Rider;
Chris Eckman – Ghostrider;
Chris Eckman – Many Moons;
Pink Anderson – The Titanic;
The Standells – Dirty Water;
The Everly Brothers – Amanda Ruth.

4. Apache – Radical Sabbatical

Apache - Radical SabbaticalDirtiest record in 2010 is this one. It reminds us that one of the duties of rock’n’roll is to shock and embarrass. It sounds as an outtake from early 1970’s glam rock scene in New York – The Dolls with Wayne County on vocals, but it is 2010 and it is the San Francisco scene. Snotty lyrics paired with serious riffs and great melodies will make you want more. Strong rhythms will make it hard for you to sit down. My great hopes are that some of the Cleveland music promoters will bring this band to the city so we can check how it all sounds live, as it seems that this is the best setting for this motley crowd. Party on with the Apache!

Flashlite #88

Dennis HopperToday we say goodbye to Dennis Hopper – a Hollywood rebel for a reason, actor and director. His best known legacy is Easy Rider astonishing road epic that he directed, co-wrote and co-starred. This movie somehow sneaked into the foundation of what we know now as rock’n’roll. But my favorite movie that Hopper directed was Hot Spot. We interleave music from these two movies throughout the show. Besides that, we also play the new music made by David Hidalgo and Louie Perez of Los Lobos. We also have two new bands for the first time at show. Hornet Leg from Portland, OR and Apache from San Francisco. Both bands are represented with their records that actually came out some time ago, but we didn’t get a chance to present them until now.

Roger McGuinn – Ballad of Easy Rider;
Steppenwolf – Born to be Wild;
Jack Nitzsche – Bank Robbery;
The Byrds – Wasn’t Born To Follow;
Los Lobos – Will The Wolf Survive;
David Hidalgo and Louie Perez – Don’t You Know;
Drive By Truckers – Birthday Boy;
Gile i Vlada – Pobuna;
The Who – Circles;
Hornet Leg – Circles;
Apache – Crystal Clear;
Apache – Finger Banger;
Sweet – Little Willy;
Jacuzzi Boys – You Got It;
Gentleman Jesse – I Don’t Wanna Know (Where You Been Tonight);
Big Drill Car – Glory;
Johnny Lee Hooker and Jack Nitzsche – Harry’s Philosophy;
The Byrds – Ballad of Easy Rider;
Jack Nitzsche – Hot Spot End Credits.
