Flashlite #339: Vinyl Junkyard 12

Mouthful of ViolenceThis is one a Vinyl Junkyard edition of our show. In Vinyl Junkyard specials I play almost entire LPs that I found dirt cheap somewhere laying in some bargain bin at a record store. Usually the stuff comes from The Blue Arrow Records in Cleveland. This time we have two albums from the nineties. Nineties were a time where LPs were being phased out on the market in favor of CDs. Still, some important record also saw vinyl versions and today we bring you Mouthful of Violence by Big Trouble House and Moontime by Anastasia Screamed. These are not just some random albums from the era, but also some of my favorite records ever. It’s a real pleasure to introduce them to you, since the bands and the records went fairly unnoticed at the time and are often missed by the critics too. Big Trouble House are from Minneapolis, lead by the guitar player Phil Harder. After the band failed to leave much mark on the scene, he moved on into making music videos. Anastasia Screamed were from Boston. They were lead by Chick Graning. This band also failed to make much fuss on the scene, so he formed Scarce which became almost famous with their single All Sideways, but Graning suffered from an aneurysm and had a bad case of amnesia. Scarce reformed recently.

Terry and LouieWe have a couple of interesting new albums today. Bonnie Prince Billy as a new record called Singer’s Grave a Sea of Tongues and it turns out to be a much more accessible version of his older album Wolfroy Goes to Town from three years ago. John Wesley Coleman III also has a new album which is a much more produced ordeal than his previous record (and I think that’s really a good direction for him). Chuck Prophet is back with Night Surfer LP which appears to be influenced by Ian Hunter’s songwriting style. Talking about Hunter, Mott The Hoople issued an excelled new double live record, recorded in 2013. Venerable bluesman Elvin Bishop also has a new record. In our segment Live in Cleveland, we introduce Cleveland band Shale Satans, who had an acoustic live set at our sponsor Blue Arrow Records. Terry Six and King Louie, two surviving members of the Exploding Hearts are back with the new single.

Eden BrentWe start off in a blues mood. First we have a Danish band from Copenhagen, Baby Woodrose. Their sound, half garage, half blues, is a perfect opener. Then we go deeper in blues. Steve Hill is a great guitar player from Canada and Eden Brent is a singer from Mississippi. Then we have Daddy Long Legs, who had a popular album two years ago with Evil Eyes On You and now they’re back with a new one Blood From A Stone. Towards the end we check out some new reissues with Paul Westerberg and The Shivvers and finish things off with a power pop band Ginnels from Ireland and the new record for Robyn Hitchcock which consists half of covers and half of originals. Don’t forget to stop by Blue Arrow Records. Among many cool vintage vinyl you can find one of my favorite records or all times, Tim Lee And Matt Piucci Gone Fishin’. I will try to feature one Blue Arrow LP each week.

Baby Woodrose – Here Today Gone Tomorrow;
Steve Hill – Still Got It Bad;

LPToday’s show is all about vinyl records in honor of the International Record Store Day, which was officially last Saturday. I stopped by the Blue Arrow Records and bought a couple of used vinyl. I wasn’t particularly interested in any of the special Record day releases, so you won’t find any of those in today’s show. The only brand new thing in today’s show is the B side of the new Fleshtones single which the band dedicated to The Ramones. This show is in honor of the vinyl and also we can only hope that the new records are as good as those that came out in the past. Perhaps I’m just hopelessly nostalgic for the old era, but in any case, it was fun to do a vinyl only show.

The Fleshtones – The Dreg;
The Fleshtones – The World Has Changed;
Eddie and the Hot Rods – Beginning of The End;
Eggs Over Easy – Nightflight;
Jay Ferguson – Everybody Goes From Here;
Lulu – Move To My Rhythm;
Two Nice Girls – Cotton Crown;
Sonic Youth – Cotton Crown;
The Silos – Start The Clock;
Zeitgeist – Without My Sight;
Fetchin Bones – A Fable;
Gunbunnies – Three Days Behind;
The Anti-Nowhere League – We Will Survive;
KUD Idijoti – Mi cemo prezivjeti;
Mike Watt – Thistle Head Man;
The Fleshtones – We Remember The Ramones.
