Billy Nomates

Little Lighthouse is usually centered around music recorded with live drum and good guitars. Very rarely do we play synthesized beats and keyboard driven music. This episode is an exception. Nearly all songs are either synthesizer based or contain synthesized beats. Fake music. Lügenmusik. I promise it’s just a one-off. I’m really not an expert in this style of music. But enough interesting new tunes came in to build a good show and it also left us with enough space to look for some classics. We begin with the new tune for Psychedelic Furs and continue with a new name for us, Billy Nomates (or Tor Maries). Then we check out a new track from Metrolight (in Cleveland) and Can Tan from Turkey. Key Out come from Australia and we check out one of the latest tunes from Moon Duo. Dead Milkman Joe Jack Talcum has a new synth based dune and the new EP from Sculpture Club is based on synths.

The Psycho SistersBack in the early nineties Vicki Peterson (from The Bangles) and Susan Cowsill (of the Cowsills), joined forces and started performing as a duet. Later in the decade, the collaboration blossomed into a new full band, Continental Drifters, which contained many of the eighties paisley pop musicians including Peterson and Cowsill. The band broke up, but Peterson and Cowsill reformed recently as The Psycho Sisters and made their first record as a duet. We feature them in today’s show, along with the new tunes for Cozy, Dead Milkmen and Allysen Callery. We also feature Birth of Joy from Netherlands, Deaf Wish from Australia and Banging Fragiles from Cleveland for the first time in our show.

The Cry!We start of today with and awesome hit single Discotheque by the new band here at the Little Lighthouse called The Cry! from Portland OR. It’s a part of a split single with The Connection who we know well by now. Then we check out The Len Price 3, who finally put out a follow up on their great LP called Pictures back in 2010. The new record is called Nobody Knows and they come from traditionally active Medway scene in England. Arbouretum from Baltimore, MD are back with the new ep, which entirely consists of the Gordon Lightfoot tunes and it represents the peak of the renewed interest about him on the modern scene. Ty Segall is putting out records so frequently, I can’t even count them anymore. But the new one is with his new band called Fuzz and it’s a heavy record done in the manner of the 70s hard rock, where he joined forces with the guitarist Charlie Moothart. Finally we have Dead Milkmen today. They put out four 7″ singles, totaling 12 new songs (almost like an LP!) recently. We check out one of the tunes which they performed together with Philadelphia singer Audrey Crash and we also check out a part of their recent show in Cleveland. They were supposed to play at the Cleveland Public Theater, but the power went down. So they took the show over to WCSB.

The Trashed Romeos with Jim Dickinson – Where Dreamers Never Go;
Games – Different Times;
The Cry! – Discotheque;
Bay City Rollers – Rock’n’roll Love Letter;
Nick Lowe – Rollers Show;
The Len Price 3 – Nobody Knows;
The Len Price 3 – Keep Your Eye On Me;
Wild Billy Childish and The Spartan Dreggs – Eli The Baker;

Amy LavereLast week we had a pleasure to see Joe Jack Talcum at the Beachland. Joe’s show was a very touching solo acoustic performance. He brought with himself another duet, also based in Philly, called The Bassturds. He also carried a box with the brand new Dead Milkmen CD. They reunited this year to record a selection of new tunes, but this time with Dandrew on bass replacing Dave Blood. So, in the first part of today’s show we listen to new tunes for the Milkmen, Joe Jack and The Bassturds. After that, we have some other artists with new records. Rock legend Duane Eddy is here, as well as Buddy Miller on a Tom T. Hall cover. Beautiful Amy LaVere is also here with her double bass. Black Lips have a new record, and let us not forget The Cajun Country Revival with their portion of Louisiana madness.

Let me just mention in the end that this is the last Little Lighthouse show and post until October, since we’re taking a small summer break.

Joe Jack Talcum – Lonelyland;
Joe Jack Talcum – Dean’s Dream;
