Severa Gjurin

Today we check out the latest tunes from whatever was left of Yugoslavia. We start with Norveska Suma from Novi Sad and Detroit Groove Gang (they claim they are from Croatia, Michigan). Over in Ljubljana, we check out Misli and Lelee. Damjan Manevski is behind both bands. Severa Gjurin, also from Ljubljana had a nice single last winter, so we check it out now in the middle of summer. Croatia always had small towns with interesting bands. That tradition continues and in this episode we check out M.O.R.T. from Sinj and Skotni Vrag from Virovitica. Serbia also has small towns, and Marko Artukovic comes from Sabac. Tidal Pull has a new single and so does the veterans Rebel Star.

2021

Last year we started our year-end review of best albums that we heard in the past year. This week we head positions 14 to 1. For the number one this year I chose Californian band Cool Ghouls. After several delightful garage rock records, last year they took a huge leap and made a fantastic genre spanning record that shows good taste, measure and expert knowledge of rock’n’roll history. One song will remind you of Beach Boys, other on Todd Rundgren, another one of Byrds, Love, Leonard Cohen… approach seems deliberate and result is stunning album. In a post-post-post modern post-capitalist world an this album looks like a conveyor belt in which best moments of the past roll by one by one, perfectly strung together until the final product comes out. They do their recycling shamelessly and proudly. It’s paradoxically original. It’s an art form. And we love it here.

Our list for 2021 looks like this…

Lelee

Today we begin with two bands based in Slovenia: Čao Portorož and Lelee. In addition to their local tongue, in the best tradition of Slovenian bands, they also mix in Serbocroatian. And Lelee also does lyrics in Macedonian. That sort of panslavism is welcome at the Little Lighthouse. Another thing welcome is Todd Rundgren. Two recent bands released songs that sound a lot like his tunes: The Nude Party from North Carolina and Green Seagull from London. Son of Gene Clark, Kai Clark has released a tribute to his father and we check it out today. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard has a new single. We close the show with two tributes to fallen heroes. Emitt Rhodes has passed away on July 19 and Peter Green six days after that.

Peter Bardens – Homage To The God Of Light;
ÄŒao Portorož – Å est;
Lelee – Fasciniran (sum od mnogu lugje);
Todd Rundgren – Izzat love;
Neon Indian – Deadbeat Summer;
Todd Rundgren – I Saw the Light;
The Nude Party – Shine Your Light;
Green Seagull – Dream You’re Living;
The Rolling Stones – Scarlet;
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Honey;
