Stars Like Ours

Today we begin by rocking out to the new tunes from Barrence Whitfield and Low Cut Connie. There’s a new band Stereo Burlesque featuring Frank Vazzano (of Cobra Verde) and Dave Cintron (both of Downside Special). Jay Gonzalez joined forces with Pete Smith in a new band called Gonzalez Smith. Mitski is also back with another new album. We introduce new names too: Stars Like Ours and Hi-End from Boston, Radio Field from Dusseldorf, Germany and Lunar Laugh from Oklahoma. At the end of the show, we pay a tribute to Gethway brothers from Monstrous. Alex passed away recently and Ken back in 2010.

Kate MakiOur show today brings the new music from Mitski, Kate Maki and duet of Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle. We introduce the new band out of Boston Sandwich Police, that features Evan Dando of The Lemonheads, who made a surprise Cleveland show recently. Starling Electric from Ann Arbor is another new band introduced in today’s show. We also hear newly surfaced recording of Allen Toussaint which were made shortly before him passing away this year. Another tribute today is to Chips Moman, a legendary producer and songwriter in Memphis, who sadly passed away on June 13. Mojo magazine put together an interesting compilation that covers Bob Dylan’s album Blonde on Blonde song by song and we check out the contribution from Seattle’s Night Beats.

Then we move on and check out new albums for two of the Sonic Youth guitarists which are out now, almost simultaneously. Thurston Moore made a really good one called The Best Day and Lee Ranaldo collected songs from his earlier solo albums and put them together in an acoustic setting. We also introduce three new names: Mitski from New York City, Fox and The Law from Settle and Meatbodies from Los Angeles.
