Flashlite #769

Juliana Hatfield

Two shows ago we had new music from the sixties bands. Today we have new music from the eighties bands! Boston was one of the big music centers at the end of the 80s with Lemonheads and Blake Babies. Two bands shared members too. They are all back! Lemonheads have a new single and it’s their first original song in many years. It’s Evan Dando’s tribute to Dan Lardner of QTY who passed away in June this year. John P. Strohm drummed in Lemonheads and in Blake Babies. Now he’s back with a brand new solo record as a singer songwriter. Juliana Hatfield made a tribute to Jeff Lynn and ELO. Fuzztones are back with a strange album of what sounds like remixes of other bands. Divine Horsemen have a second album together after Chris D and Julie Christensen reunited. Peter Case of The Nerves and Plimsouls has a new album and so does Jon Dee Graham of Austin’s Skunks. Ska legends Madness are also back. All that in today’s show.

The ResonarsMBV ya all… The biggest buzz since the power went out at the Super Bowl is the return of My Bloody Valentine. Without much pomp, they released a new record simply called mbv, and it sound like time did not change anything in their dreamy ways. Another interesting return is for Endless Boogie, who are going to put out a new album by the end of February. In the same time, we are expecting the new record for Tim Lee 3, and we are previewing one song from each band and each new records. New names today are Livingstone Daisies from Melbourne, Australia and The Resonars from Arizona. I made mistake announcing the band in the show though – their name is not The Resonators, but The Resonars. Another new band today is Prkos Drumski from Novi Sad – another representative of the neo-acoustic scene in ex-Yugoslavia. Trixie Whitley is back with the new record and Eamon McGrath uncovered an unpretentious collection of demos that predate his legendary Young Canadians by a few months. There’s also an interesting moment where we play Hanging On The Telephone in three different language versions as a tribute to The Nerves.

Endless Boogie – Sideways;
Endless Boogie – Taking Out the Trash;
Davila 666 – Hanging On the Telephone;
The Nerves – Hanging On The Telephone;
Fit – Zvoni Telefon;
Livingstone Daisies – Redhead;
The Resonars – Tomorrow Gears;
Terry Reid – The Way You Walk;
Tim Lee 3 – Signal;
My Bloody Valentine – New You;
My Bloody Valentine – Soft As Snow But Warm Inside;
Tame Impala – Endors Toi;
Prkos Drumski – Å aman;
Trixie Whitley – Gradual Return;
Mark Sultan – Out Of Time (Live in CLE);
Eamon McGrath – Trouble On My Mind.

5. Peter Case – Wig!

Peter Case - Wig!Peter Case is a long standing figure in the history of rock’n’roll. He indebted us with bands like The Nerves and The Plimsouls, plus his rich solo recording career and occasional production work. This year he returns with Wig!. Somewhat surprisingly (although pleasantly), Peter Case reinvents himself on this one as an uncompromising blues-man. Hallmark of this reinvention is the song New Old Blue Car, which artistically defines this record. Melancholic folk-blues tune Old Blue Car from his first solo record now has a very different taste. Let us also mention that this record is also embellished with several subtle quotations from rock’n’roll standards – for example Money in I Ain’t Got No Dough. That’s a wonderful trick that creates an immediate bound for a true rock listener. A hired gun on this album and someone who definitely left a strong mark on it is DJ Bonebrake with his rough beats. Another one who must be mentioned here is the guitarist Ron Franklin who even co-authored some songs on Wig!. I only wish the same line up was out there to tour with this record, as this kind of gritty blues is best consumed live.

The Girls At DawnOne of my favorite rock’n’roll genres is paisley underground where a bunch of 80s bands revisited the sound of the 60s. I keep hearing and reading lately how there are new bands that embrace these bands as huge influences. Basically, we have bands that revisit the 80s bands who revisited the 60s sound. I think that’s wonderful! Today we represent three such bands, two of which are brand new. We have Brooklyn ladies The Girls At Dawn and The Parties from San Diego for the first time at the show. Third band is not a stranger to us, it’s La Fleur Fatale from Sweden. In the mix, we also hear some classic paisley recordings. Talking about paisley-power-pop, Paul Collins from The Nerves and The (US) Beat is back with a new record. Two excellent records that came out earlier this year, but we never got a chance to play them are here also: Nobunny with First Blood and Demon’s Claws with Defrosting. And Kurt Vile’s War on Drugs are also here with a new record, although with Vile out of the band for this particular release…

Ducks Deluxe – Too Hot To Handle;
The Girls At Dawn – They’re Waiting;
The Parties – Catastrophic Storm;
The Nashville Ramblers – The Trains;
The Wind – Wake Up;
La Fleur Fatale – Last Ride;
Steve Wynn An The Miracle 3 – Cloud Splitter;
Felt – Apple Boutique;
The Nerves – Working Too Hard;
Paul Collins – You Tore Me Down;
Pete Townshand – Circles;
The Greenhornes – Saying Goodbye;
Nobunny – Live It Up;
Nobunny – Ain’t It A Shame;
