Hollow Ship

We have a heavier, psych show today. We start with Slift from Toulouse France and Local H from Chicago. Then we go to Australia and hear the new music from the supergroup Datura4. Green/Blue is a new name for us, but I know very little about them. Their new album doesn’t even have a title. Hollow Ship are a psych band from Sweden. King Khan has put out some soundtrack music and Predrag Delibasic teamed up with Jurij Novoselic into a new project by the name of Alex Robokapov, although, Jurij used that last name during his stint in Disciplina Kicme. And, as the main feature today, Dream Syndicate have a new album out called The Universe Inside and we hear one of the longer songs on it, Apropos Nothing.

6. smRts – Sun Sets On A New Tomorrow

smRts - Sun Sets On A New TomorrowsmRts come from Perth, Australia, and they are a brain child of Pedja Delibasic who’s been a part of the Perth music scene for more than ten years now. He’s been in various bands and he is an avid record collector, especially the records from Yugoslavia. His great knowledge of various kinds of music allowed him to come up with a clever instrumental concept of three guitars and drums, lead by his playful one string guitar picking. Album is filled with thrilling quotations from the Yugoslavian sub-culture, although they are subtle enough to be completely missed by a casual listener. With all this, the most fun, dance-able record this year, comes from Perth, Australia.

Reigning SoundToday we have three new releases by three regular acts here at the Little Lighthouse. Mission of Burma’s new LP The Sound The Speed The Light confirms that they are more than just another 80s reunion. I still remember vividly their amazing open air concert here in Cleveland this summer. Greg Cartwright’s Reigning Sound are also back with their new album Love and Curses, and it re-establishes Cartwright as one the greatest songwriters at this point in history. Another prolific Memphis punk, Jay Reatard has a new album called Watch Me Fall. This master of short form (singles and eps), proves that he can do a long player just as well. We also bring you a new attraction from Perth Australia – smRts, founded by Pedja Delibasic who we know from defunct Soviet Valves.

Greg KoonsAfter four-week break, The Little Lighthouse is finally back. But not for long. In two weeks Radio SC is taking a summer break with re-runs, so this show will resume when they return in September. But let’s see what we have on today! Dinosaur Jr are back with a new album called Farm and it’s a good one! I must admit, I did not expect too much, since it seemed to me that their reunion was motivated by anything but pure artistic inspiration. I guess I was wrong. Greg Koons, who we praised for his great LA on TV song, finally has a debut record out. It’s called Welcome to the Nowhere Motel and it represents him as already developed singer-songwriter with a nice rock edge. Another songwriter, Willie Nile, who wrote some of the most engaging lyrics about New York City, is also back. The new album is called House of a Thousand Guitars. And then we have one more singer-songwriter, Ray Mason, the hardest working man in rock’n’roll who puts out at least two records per year, is back again with the new record Like Bugs Chewing on Paper and this time it’s a solo deal. Predrag Delibasic, multi-instrumentalist from Perth, Australia recently recorded a demo and a single, and it’s filled with very approachable, danceable but imaginative instrumentals, played on weird instruments. We end things up today with two live bootlegs that I’ve recorded in Pittsburgh using my mp3-player: Ed fROMOHIO and Grant Hart – two legendary SST musicians who need no introduction.
