When Allison Russell, Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla and Amythyst Kiah founded Our Native Daughters in 2019, it was a revelation. Three of those amazing performers are shaking things up again in the music world with interesting new music. Their close collaborator Luther Dickinson also has a new album and we have a large block dedicated to all of them. We also check out new blues scene from Italy, especially new music fom Fabrizio Poggi and Messa. Don Howland, Annie Keating, Betty Lavette and Tracy Nelson are also back with new music.

Yawpers are back with their third album and so is Eamon McGrath, this time with the newest single. We dig into Memphis neo-traditionalists, Luther Dickinson collaborates with Amy Helm, Amy LaVere, Sharde Thomas and the Como Mamas as Sisters of the Strawberry Moon and another four of his friends, Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell, perform together as Our Native Daughters. Also down south, our good friend Kim Simpson has a new album and we check out Helen Rose for the first time in our show. Veteran and legendary musician who played with Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Todd Rundgren, Hunt Sales is back in a new project. Finally, Scientists visited our town and we check out their new song.
Today we start off with the new music from the Texan violin player Amanda Shires. Then we introduce the new blues singer Shemekia Copeland. A star studded line up helps her on the new record, including Steve Cropper, John Prine, Rhiannon Giddens and Emmylou Harris. Jon S. Williams from City of Cool has some new recordings that he sent to us, so we check that out too. Dan Stuart (ex Green On Red) is back with the new record and legendary songwriter and graphic novelist Peter Blegvad is also back with new music. Dot Dash from Washington are back with the new album Proto Retro. We introduce John Brodeur from New York with his Bird Streets and a duet featuring Lia Pamina and Dario Persi from Italy. The we introduce the guitar player from Minneapolis Ben Glaros who landed his skills to the Pirner brothers Dave and Paul on a Slim Dunlap tribute band The Happy Roosters and Fathom Lane with Michael Ferrier. My friend Stanjin Strbac has a new column and he writes about Rhiannon Giddens and Son Volt. Inspired by his writings, we check out these two in today’s show.
