Tom Verlaine

Today we check out the latest in loosely speaking post wave. We have new singles from the Australian bands R.M.F.C. and Straight Arrows and also French band Frustration and Spitting Image from Reno, Nevada. We check out new album announcements from two Ohio bands, The Drin from Cincinnati and Public Squares from Cleveland. Bass Drum of Death from Oxford, Mississippi has a new album and Eamon McGrath did something outrageous – seven (yes 7!) new albums in just one day. Over in LA, Fernando Perdomo and Michael Collins collaborate as Broken Sound. Today’s show is dedicated to Tom Verlaine, legendary guitarist of Television who passed away on January 28.

Elin Larsson, Blues PillsWe start of rocking hard. Mojo Magazine came up with the third instalment of their Heavy Nuggets and it sounds heavier than ever. Then we have a new name from Sweden – a hard rocking band Blues Pills fronted by Elin Larsson. Twin Peaks hail from Chicago and have a new album Wild Onion. Then we have a nice pair from Hozac – two singles and two new bands, 999999999 from the US and Southern Comfort from Australia, lead by Harriet Hudson and Angie Bermuda (also in Straight Arrows). One of the strongest albums this year so far is a duet by Lydia Lunch and Cypress Grove, entitle simply A Fistful of Desert Blues. They recorded a bunch of punky blues songs and it’s really strong. Then we have Richard Thompson with a new acoustic solo record in which he revisits his classics. But probably the coolest little bit today comes out in our Live in CLE segment. Today we have a brand new band from Cleveland called Monday Sound and it’s put together by Tom Fallon (New Salem Witch Hunters) and Brent Ferguson (Living Stereo). They covered no less than two Jackie DeShannon songs on their first gig ever and my recorder was handy…

The Gun Club – The Stranger In Our Town;
Freedom – Going Down;
Blues Pills – High Class Woman;
Ian McLagan and The Bump Band – All I Wanna Do;
Freddie King – Going Down (Blues Alphabet);
Twin Peaks – No Way Out;

Jenny ScheinmanAs if we didn’t have a lot of Australians in our last show, we open up with yet another band from Down Under. Straight Arrows have a great new record called Rising. That land never seems to have a shortage of great sounds. Back in America, Ty Segall has a new, very heave single and Bob Mould is in good spirit with a loud new record called Beauty and Ruin. Jenny Scheinman is also back with a new record called The Littlest Prisoner. And a special treat this time is The Chamber Strings. A band lead by Kevin Junior, who is a Cleveland native, but now lives in Chicago. He reformed the band with an all-Cleveland lineup and they had a great show in Cleveland opening for The Sadies. We check out an exclusive track recorded live that night.

Velvet Underground – Oh! Sweet Nuthin’;
Sonic Chicken 4 – Love by the Riverside;
Straight Arrows – Petrified;
Straight Arrows – Haunted Out;
