Today we check out new music from Susanna Hoffs (who used to be in Bangles). She made a cover record. Successful Failures from Trenton, NJ and Loose Koozies from Detroit are back with new tunes. Italian powerpoppers Radio Days have a new single. We introduce Grand Splendid from Montreal in Canada and Warmbabies from Nice in France. We close the show with two obits related to visual art characters important to rock music. Photographer Mick Rock passed away on November 18th and painter Kosta Bunusevac passed away on September 8th.

Matthew Sweet and Susanna HoffsToday we have a relatively random playlist consisting of some of the most interesting cover songs in the past year or so. The only truly new record this time is Under The Covers Vol 3 by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs. This time they covered the 80s and we hear their version of the XTC song Towers of London. We also check out Replacements and Arbouretum, each with a Gordon Lightfoot tune, Dan Sarka covers The Records and Steve Wynn covers Townes Van Zandt. We recorded Dax Riggs in Kent with a cover of a Billie Holiday tune and we also check out Carla Olson and Juice Newton belt out a Foster and Lloyd tune and The Walkabouts in Boss’ shoes.

Alicja TroutToday we start with two Alicias. Actually, one Alicia and one Alicja. Alicia Gbur is a well known photographer from the Detroit area and a former member of Von Bondies. She also has a new band called Fawn. Their debut album Coastlines came out recently. Alicja Trout is also a multi-talented artist, but she’s from Memphis, TN. Her new band River City Tanlines has a new album Coast To Coast. Susanna Hoffs, from The Bangles has a new solo record out and it has a sweet retro sound, produced by Mitchell Froom. Amy Allison joined forces with David Scott of the Pearlfishers for their new album together called Turn Like The World Does. Bob Mould’s Sugar had put out reissues of nearly their entire catalog, including some live recording that are out for the first time.

Freddy Mark Linkous Today’s show is dedicated to Mark Linkous, a guy that contributed a lot to the 90s rock’n’roll with his band Sparklehorse and who committed sucide last Saturday. We pay a very special tribute in this show to Mark Linkous with an unexpected song selection. Hear Mark foot stomping with Bryan Harvey, playing with Susanna Hoffs and rocking out with his 80s band Dancing Hoods. We also have the new Roky Erickson and a new Jason and The Scorchers tune. We have a Cleveland band Whiskey Daredevils who have their debut album out these days. They have a song on it dedicated to Johnny Cash. Which reminds me, there’s the sixth volume of his American recordings out.

Susanna HoffsWe have a ton of really good new stuff this week, some of it came in just recently and other stuff came in this summer while we were gone. Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet continue their Under The Covers series with a two cd set filled with their versions of their favorite songs from the 70s. Tony Kinman, legendary member of Dils and Rank And File joined forces with his friend Pope Johnson and formed recently a wonderfully playful new band called Los Trendy. Soulsavers with Mark Lanegan are back again with the new album called Broken. Blues duet The Moaners have a new demo called Little Man. Cleveland’s own blues man Derek DePrator is also back with a new record and a new cassette tape with exciting self-titled collection of instrumentals. Finally, loud power pop outfit Satin Gum from Pittsburgh, who had an excellent ep earlier this year, are now here with a full lp, and it’s sounds sweet!
