In this installment of the Little Lighthouse, we review albums that took #30-#14 positions on my list. Pete ShelleyToday we open with the new tune from Bevis Frond. They are still putting out great dense albums. Bob Mould will be back with the new record next year, but the advance single from it is already there. Thee Melomen over in Zagreb Croatia have a new single and the new album is out too, both titled Disappear. Also in Zagreb, San Mikulec keeps cranking up great songs. Further sough down the Brotherhood and Unity Freeway, in Macedonia, we have Vasko, always extremely productive, with a new single for his project 21 vek. UK singer Elisa Zoot teamed up with Calibro 35 on a new single. We also have to obituaries. Seid 1st Karajlić, keyboardist of Zabranjeno PuÅ¡enje passed away on November 9th and Pete Shelley, the legendary leader of Buzzcocks passed away last week. This episode is dedicated our fallen rock’n’roll heroes.

Flashlite #411 – The Best Albums in 2016 (Part One)

Best of 2015We start today with the countdown to my list of favorite albums in 2016. Today we cover positions 35-14. It doesn’t mean that these any worse than the ones we will put in top 13, it’s just a matter of personal taste. This year was not an easy one, but it brought us some records that will stay with us for many years I think. In this bottom end of the list you will find two bands that did really well in our list last year, with their new albums (Datura4 and Faux Killas). Some of the old friends returned (Ray Mason, Descendents, Westerberg, Jonathan Richman, Javier Escovedo and Apache) and there are a few records from what used to be Yugoslavia (Bernays Propaganda, Thee Melomen, Erotic Biljan). Lilly HiattToday we check out the new album from Thee Melomen from Zagreb called Chinatown. Also, we have new music from the legendary Pretty Things, All Them Witches and Kropotkins. Lilly Hiatt, daughter of John Hiatt is back with a very good new album (great drum sound and lovely songs on it!). Bernays Propaganda from Skopje also have a new record called Politika and looks at the politics from a female view point. Royal Headache is a new band for us from Australia and their latest album called High rocks. Finally, a tribute to Lemmy.

Patsy Gelb of Patsy's RatsWe bring you some cool new stuff. Daughter of Howe Gelb and Paula Jean Brown (of the original Giant Sand line up), has a great band called Patsy’s Rats. Impulsive Hearts from Chicago are also fronted by a lady: Danielle Sines. Miriam Linna of Norton Records has made another new album this year Down Today. We also introduce Green Hornet from Netherlands and Sloming Moops from Zagreb, Croatia. Also from there, Thee Melomen have a new single. Peter Buck of REM is back with a nice solo record. An interesting tribute came out recently in Tucson AZ for Rainer Ptacek.

Useless EatersWe start off today with a tribute to Husker Du. Two Canadian bands, Red Arms and Wasted Potential put their resources together and made a coll tribute to Husker Du. The whole thing is on their bandcamp account, available for a free download. Another free download that you might want to consider is by The Babies – a really cool band from Zagreb who had a wonderful vinyl LP 10 years ago and now, the band offers it officially in a digital format. The Babies are long time defunct, but some of their members how play as Thee Melomen. They also have a cool cover of Husker Du! We also have new tunes by Built Do Spill from Boise ID and Warm Soda from Austin TX. We also have a nice block from Danny Kroha (ex Gories), with music from his new album and recent performances live in Cleveland. We also check out Mink Deville live CD and the new album from Becca Stevens Band. At the end of the show, we pay tribute to Ben E King (ex Drifters) and Jack Ely (ex Kingsmen).

PridjeviWe have two new heavy rock albums to start off today. Hush or Howl by Black Pistol Fire of Toronto and Austin and Get Pure by Mount Carmel from Columbus. Thee Melomen come from Zagreb, and they are basically Backstreet Brats re-branded. Pridjevi are from around there as well – studio trio which consists of Nina Romić, Dino Santaleza and Ivana Picek. Sally Crewe from Austin TX has a new ep with a cover of XTC’s Making Plans for Nigel. Doug Gillard is a guest guitar hero on it. The Hold Steady are back with the new record. For those who like mellower sounds, we have Kevin Kane from Toronto with his charming cover of Simon And Garfunkel’s Cathy and Allysen Callery re-imagines Gordon Lighfoot’s Sundown.
