The New Pornographers have a new record and so does the singer of The Ettes, Coco Hames. Guided By Voices recorded a new, lengthy double album too. But a special treat today is a block in which we check out separate projects of each new member of Ty Segall’s band. Charles Mootheart has a new CFM album and so does Emmet Kelly with his Cairo Gang. Today we start off with the recently reunited Australian 80s band Ratcat. Then we check out Sweet Apple covering April Wine, just as they are preparing the new album Sing The Night in Sorrow, which is due this Summer (but you know how those things always get delayed…). NE-HI are a new band from Chicago and Samantha Fish is hailing from Kansas City with her cigar box guitar. Arbouretum are back with the new record and so is Rodney Crowell. Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang is back with the new record, as a result of collaboration with Ty Segall. Jaye Jayle is a new name for us from Louisville, KY!
Ty Segall is back with the new record and so is Mark Sultan. Other than those two fantastic comebacks, we have a few new introductions. Sex Organs are two people dressed as – you guessed it – male and female sex organs costumes. Becky Warren is a new singer-songwriter from Nashville. TOY are a quartet from England and Charlie Faye and the Fayettes are three ladies. Besides Charlie, BettySoo is also there as well as Akina Adderley. Finally, Jason Simon from Old Testament is here with his first solo album. We also hear Stray Trolleys that were active back in 1982 with some cassettes, now available digitally.
Today we have one new band with all female members. The Beverleys – three ladies from Toronto. Jenny Don’t ails from Portland and fronts her punk rock band Don’t. We also introduce the new band for Chris Shaw from Ex Cult, Ty Segall and Charles Moothart from Fuzz called Goggs. The man that made my favorite record last year, Andy Gabbard visited Cleveland and played some new tunes. My field recorder was ready. We also introduce Cowboys from Bloomington IN and a Toronto supergroup Highest Orders. One of the most pleasant surprises this week is Leland Sundries from New York and their new record called Music For Outcasts. Senior Service is an instrumental band from UK. Prkos Drumski covers Fairport Convention by the camp fire and we check it out.
Today we introduce Fernando Viciconte and Mean Jeans from Portland, OR. Also, from England, we have the three ladies from Thee Jezebels and afro-punk by The Heavy. Charles Moothart from San Francisco is a buddy of Ty Segall and we hear his band CFM for the first time today. Guida from Italy are back with a new album called Guida Speaks Evil. The news comes to us that Andrew Loomis, drummer of the legendary Dead Moon passed away on March 8, so we prepared a block of Dead Moon songs to remember him by.
Today we pay tribute to four artists that passed away in the recent days. Kevin Junior was an institution of the larger Cleveland and Chicago scenes. Music that he created with The Chamber Strings was much larger than the attention they were given. He passed away on January 17. Dale Buffin Griffin from Mott The Hoople passed away on the same day after 10 years struggling with alzheimer’s. Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane passed away on January 28 and the original singer of Jefferson Airplane Signe Toly Anderson passed away as well on the same day. But amidst of all those tragic news, we find time to hear some new music as well. Our friends at Blue Arrow Records released the new album by Jonathan Richman entitled Ishkode! Ishkode!. Ty Segall has a new record called Emotional Mugger. Night Beats come from Seattle and we check out their new album Who Sold My Generation. We open up with The I Don’t Cares, which is a new duet featuring Paul Westerberg and Juliana Hatfield.
We have some hot reissues this time from the Numero Group. As a continuation of their Nikki Sudden reissues, we also now have the first Jacobites reissues, the first lp and Robespierre’s Velvet Basement. Another hot reissue on the same label is Texan hard rock band Josefus with their 1970 loud masterpiece Dead Man. We also have some interesting new records. Brian Olive, who used to be with The Greenhornes and Soledad Brothers, now has a new EP called Move. We introduce The Ugly Beats from Austin TX and Rat Columns for the first time at The Little Lighthouse. Rock’n’roll megastars J Mascis and Ty Segall have new records each and Mark Lanegan had put out the new EP as an advance for the upcoming new record in the Fall this year.
As if we didn’t have a lot of Australians in our last show, we open up with yet another band from Down Under. Straight Arrows have a great new record called Rising. That land never seems to have a shortage of great sounds. Back in America, Ty Segall has a new, very heave single and Bob Mould is in good spirit with a loud new record called Beauty and Ruin. Jenny Scheinman is also back with a new record called The Littlest Prisoner. And a special treat this time is The Chamber Strings. A band lead by Kevin Junior, who is a Cleveland native, but now lives in Chicago. He reformed the band with an all-Cleveland lineup and they had a great show in Cleveland opening for The Sadies. We check out an exclusive track recorded live that night.
Things are very complicated this year. There are two excellent bands with the name of (The) Fuzz. Both are special projects from previously well established musicians. There is Fuzz (without “the”) from San Francisco lead by Ty Segall, a band that has captured attention of music fans all over the world. The other Fuzz is The Fuzz, they are from Memphis and they are lead by Harlan T. Bobo. You won’t hear that much about this band in fancy web portals though, except in this one.
A couple of new things today. Ty Segall is in action again, putting out a demo version of his last year’s album Twins, now renamed into Gemini. So the concept is now closed, it’s a twin record. He also has a band called Fuzz, but now, to complete the confusion, there’s a different band called The Fuzz, from Memphis, fronted by Hector, supposedly brother of Harlan T. Bobo, although I’m not so sure if it’s really not the same elusive rock’n’roll songwriter. Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett recorded a jam boogie record in 1986 called No End, in which he recorded all the instruments. This came out only now, after 27 years. The rest of the show is bit more conventional. We have a new band called White Denim from Austin, TX and a New Orleans cellist Leyla McCalla who recorded an LP with Langston Hughes lyrics.
