Flashlite #520

Tena Rak, Å ećerWelcome to the first ‘regular’ edition of The Little Lighthouse in 2019. Today we play a tune from the new ESC Life album, out soon on Ill In The Head records in North America. ESC Life come from Croatia, and so does Tena Rak. She used to play drums in Vlasta Popić, but that band no longer plays together. So we check out her solo act dubbed Å ećer and quartet Mi Nerve with three other ladies, Ivana PuÅ¡nik , Tea Ovničević, and Ivana Ljubičić. Back in the USA, Terry Six and Louie Bankston (ex Exploding Hearts) are back with an excellent new album together. Eugene Chadbourne teamed up with The Sunwatchers and recorded an album tribute to Minutemen, Doug Sahm and Henry Flyn. Paisley Underground legends Bangles, Three O’Clock, Dream Syndicate and Rain Parade made a record together covering each other’s songs. It’s almost a follow up to the legendary Rainy Day album. John Petković and Dave James of Death of Samantha have a new synth pop duet, Metrolight and we check out one of the songs recorded live in Cleveland recently. Holly Golightly has a new English solo album out and lots of folks included it on their lists of best albums last year. Yes, it’s that good. Outrageous Cherry are back with their final album entitled Meet You In The Shadows completed before the passing of founding lead guitarist Larry Ray.

Flashlite #360 – The Best Albums in 2015 (Part One)

Best of 2015Today we begin our traditional review of the best records at the Little Lighthouse in the past year. Although “the best” should be understood in a very limited way. These records is basically just a very personal selection of new music that stuck with me this year. It may not be the best, but it somehow resonated in my mind. The time will tell whether these records will last longer than one season, but I definitely tend to go back to the stuff that I liked.

The list this year has 25 titles, and we first cover the bottom end of the list. The next week is 2016 and we will cover the top 10. This was a good year for the music from ex-Yugoslavia. We have two bands in the lower part of the list (Vlasta Popić and Bernays Propaganda). One more title will be covered next week. It was also a good year for Swedish bands. This year we have Ghost and Bäddat För Trubbel. Australians are traditionally welcome on our list(Zerodent, Paul Kelly and one more next week). Memphis, Austin, Detroit and San Francisco still rule in the US. Looking forward to 2016 – hopefully with even more surprises for the new generations of rockers…

Sweet Apple – I Surrender;
The Bevis Frond – Second Son;
Paul Kelly – Where Were You When I Needed You (With Clairy Browne);
The Yawpers – Walter;
Vlasta Popić – O vodi;
The Ghost – From The Pinnacle To The Pit;

Flashlite #313

Vlasta PopićToday we represent the new album for Cincinnati’s Buffalo Killers. We also have Ex Cult from Memphis with their last year’s album which fell through the cracks. Chris Brokaw teamed up with Chicago professor Geoff Farina on a new acoustic guitar album. New names today are Canadian actress and singer with a great voice Colleen Rennison. Old Testament come from LA and bring out some strong roots rock. But, some of the most interesting things this week come from the SE Europe. Umreti Fit come from Szeged, Hungary and sing in Serbo-Croatian. Vlasta Popić from Varazdin, Croatia, bring out some jumpy, energetic rock’n’roll, which reminds me on Boye, especially on their tune Ako nisam dobra.
