Rachel Nagy

Today’s show is dedicated to Ronnie Spector and Rachel Nagy, two incredible singers that we lost recently. But before we get into our tributes to Ronnie and Rachel, we check out some new releases. Annie Keating from New York has a new album. Le Butcherettes and Death Valley Girls have a split single and we hear both sides. Gyasi from Nashville has a new single and Aoife O’Donovan from New York is a new name for us, and she released a new album and added an extra cover album consisting of songs from Springsteen’s Nebraska.

2021

First ‘regular’ show this year! We present the hottest in garage rock from recent weeks. The most exciting novelty is West Coat collaboration between Mike Watt and Cutthroat Brothers. They have released two new records recently. Another supergroup is Teeth of England from Memphis with Dave Sinclair behind the concept, Jack Oblivian behind the drums and Jason Rice from Faux Killas playing guitar. Strange Colours also has a new record and it’s a Toronto band lead by Andrew Moszynski who used to be with Deadly Snakes. Over in Australia we hear Power Supply from Melbourne. Over in Europe we check out Komodor from France and Roman Aul and Rosarys from Germany, who did a new record collaborating with the legendary Detroit producer Jim Diamond. From Switzerland, we check out the new tune by The Jackets. We finish the show with a little tribute to Bill Conway who used to play drums in Treat Her Right and Morphine. Conway passed away on December 19 last year.

2021

Last year we started our year-end review of best albums that we heard in the past year. This week we head positions 14 to 1. For the number one this year I chose Californian band Cool Ghouls. After several delightful garage rock records, last year they took a huge leap and made a fantastic genre spanning record that shows good taste, measure and expert knowledge of rock’n’roll history. One song will remind you of Beach Boys, other on Todd Rundgren, another one of Byrds, Love, Leonard Cohen… approach seems deliberate and result is stunning album. In a post-post-post modern post-capitalist world an this album looks like a conveyor belt in which best moments of the past roll by one by one, perfectly strung together until the final product comes out. They do their recycling shamelessly and proudly. It’s paradoxically original. It’s an art form. And we love it here.

Happy new year everyone! It’s that time of the year when we roll our year end list of best albums in a year we leave behind us. I selected 30 albums that I liked the most and played frequently in the past year. This is the first installment in which we hear albums on positions from 30 to 15. Tune in next week for the completed list. As with any other list, it’s highly subjective but at least those who listen to this show shouldn’t be too surprised for what’s in it. Dive in while we ring in the new!
