Flashlite #769

Juliana Hatfield

Two shows ago we had new music from the sixties bands. Today we have new music from the eighties bands! Boston was one of the big music centers at the end of the 80s with Lemonheads and Blake Babies. Two bands shared members too. They are all back! Lemonheads have a new single and it’s their first original song in many years. It’s Evan Dando’s tribute to Dan Lardner of QTY who passed away in June this year. John P. Strohm drummed in Lemonheads and in Blake Babies. Now he’s back with a brand new solo record as a singer songwriter. Juliana Hatfield made a tribute to Jeff Lynn and ELO. Fuzztones are back with a strange album of what sounds like remixes of other bands. Divine Horsemen have a second album together after Chris D and Julie Christensen reunited. Peter Case of The Nerves and Plimsouls has a new album and so does Jon Dee Graham of Austin’s Skunks. Ska legends Madness are also back. All that in today’s show.

Judy Dyble

Today’s show is dedicated to the wonderful Judy Dyble, the founding vocalist of Fairport Convention and the early singer for the band that grew into King Crimson. She passed away from lung cancer on July 12, this year. Other than that, we check out the new tunes from the 80s underground legends: newly reformed Divine Horsemen, Smudge, Dream Syndicate and The Jayhawks, including their renegade member Mark Olson, with his most recent partner in crime, Ingunn Ringvold. Cherry on top are newly discovered vault music from possibly some of greatest rock’n’roll bands in the history: The Rolling Stones, The Replacements and a project of the Yardbirds members Keith Relf and Jim McCarty called Together. If this doesn’t turn out to be a great listening, then nothing you ain’t a true rocker.

Flashlite #412 – The Best Albums in 2016 (Part Two)

Best of 2015Last we presented positions 35-14 of what I think were the best albums in 2016. Today we continue with that business and we present Top 13 best albums this year. It doesn’t mean that these any worse than the ones we will put in top 13, it’s just a matter of personal taste. This year was not an easy one, but it brought us some records that will stay with us for many years I think. The top part of the list is reserved some some incredible comebacks (Sylvia Juncosa, Dinosaur Jr, Jody Stephens), new comers (Honeymoon Disease, Honey, Blaak Heat, Connections). But the album that marked year from me, is Julie Christensen’s new project Stone Cupid. She sang better than ever, on a record that is rocking, grungy and rootsy at the same time. A killer span of genres that can only be brought by one of the Divine Horsemen. Dive into my selection of the top 13 records and hopefully you will find something for yourself. See you next year!
