Today we bring you the new record from Juliana Hatfield, first solo after her collaboration with Paul Westerberg and a playful album of Olivia Newton John covers last year. Matthew Sweet is also active, these days his new album Wicked System of Things is capturing attention of many music lovers. Legendary Long Ryders are back with a new single too. Nikki Hill, out in Durham, NC is back with the new album called Feline Roots. Jon S. Williams of City of Cool sent us one of his recent live sets. Dave Hill who we enjoyed last year as a part of Painted Doll duet is back with yet another interesting band Valley Lodge. We also introduce Italian band The Dirtiest and Teardrop City over in Oxford Mississippi, lead by Laurie Stirratt (ex Blue Mountain).

We have a lot of new music from our heroes today. Matthew Sweet has a new album and so does Holly Golightly with her Brokeoffs. Krist Novoselic returned as a bass player and accordionist of a new band called Giants In The Trees. Jillian Raye, however, is the front woman of the band. We also introduce Chris Price from LA. Also from LA, we have Groovy Movies. Shirley Davis from Madrid, Spain and Bottle Kids from Chicago, IL are also here for the first time. We also pay respect to Ralph Carney, instrumentalist from Akron OH, who passed away back in December. We know him well from his work with Tom Waits on Rain Dogs.
Today we have a relatively random playlist consisting of some of the most interesting cover songs in the past year or so. The only truly new record this time is Under The Covers Vol 3 by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs. This time they covered the 80s and we hear their version of the XTC song Towers of London. We also check out Replacements and Arbouretum, each with a Gordon Lightfoot tune, Dan Sarka covers The Records and Steve Wynn covers Townes Van Zandt. We recorded Dax Riggs in Kent with a cover of a Billie Holiday tune and we also check out Carla Olson and Juice Newton belt out a Foster and Lloyd tune and The Walkabouts in Boss’ shoes.
Today we are saying the last goodbye to one of the true rock’n’roll legends. Reg Presley of the Troggs left this ugly world on Fabruary 4th this month. We listen to his music at the end of the show. We also have some new stuff. Mike Watt put out a record with his Italian friends Stefano Pilia and Andrea Belfi. The three of them make together a trio called Il Sogno Del Marinaro. Richard Thompson is also back with a new record called Electric, and it is one of the better ones he made in recent years. We also have two new bands today, Punks On Mars from Brooklyn, NY and the Schills from Portland, OR. Glttery Schills are ran by the Paisley Pop Records boss Jim Huie and this label also released a tribute to Bobby Sutliff recently. Today we continue listening to this record with a selection from a very interesting collaboration between Velvet Crush and Matthew Sweet.
Today’s show is dedicated to the 80s new wave scene from Georgia and the South of the USA. Everything is peculiar in the South, so is the new wave scene. The direct inspiration for today’s show is the LP called Jericho Go, a compilation record that was put together jointly by The DB Records in the US and the Stiff Records in UK. Now, it can only be found in rare used records bins in these two countries, and it’s probably not an easy task. Still, it’s an obscure, but a cherished item in my record collection. This show brings every single song from that LP and the rest of the time is filled with some other related tunes either by other Southern new wave bands or related acts from a different era. Today we have a large block dedicated to Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin. We know Ty from our earlier shows. Mikal is in his band, and also has a solo record which offers a new standard for the snot punk scene. It’s a wonderful result that showcases a new, yet fully mature songwriter. We also have a new album for The Bangles and their producer, Matthew Sweet. Glossary are back with the new record Long Live All of Us. John Doe tours USA with X, they were in Cleveland on Tuesday, but he also has a solo record out called Keeper. Tommy Keene is back with Behind The Parade. We dedicate today’s show to Jerry Leiber, one half of the songwriting tandem Leiber and Stoller, who passed away on August 22 this year.
We have a ton of really good new stuff this week, some of it came in just recently and other stuff came in this summer while we were gone. Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet continue their Under The Covers series with a two cd set filled with their versions of their favorite songs from the 70s. Tony Kinman, legendary member of Dils and Rank And File joined forces with his friend Pope Johnson and formed recently a wonderfully playful new band called Los Trendy. Soulsavers with Mark Lanegan are back again with the new album called Broken. Blues duet The Moaners have a new demo called Little Man. Cleveland’s own blues man Derek DePrator is also back with a new record and a new cassette tape with exciting self-titled collection of instrumentals. Finally, loud power pop outfit Satin Gum from Pittsburgh, who had an excellent ep earlier this year, are now here with a full lp, and it’s sounds sweet!
