Today we check out the new music from John Hiatt and Sarah Borges with her Broken Singles. Tim Lee and Susan Lee Bauer are back with a new single for their duet Bark. KT Tunstall has been around the scene 15 years now, but we introduce her for the first time here at The Little Lighthouse. We also introduce Madeline Kenney from Durham NC, Jeremy and The Harlequins from New York City, Exit Group from Berlin and Les Envahisseurs from France.
Today we check out the new album from Thee Melomen from Zagreb called Chinatown. Also, we have new music from the legendary Pretty Things, All Them Witches and Kropotkins. Lilly Hiatt, daughter of John Hiatt is back with a very good new album (great drum sound and lovely songs on it!). Bernays Propaganda from Skopje also have a new record called Politika and looks at the politics from a female view point. Royal Headache is a new band for us from Australia and their latest album called High rocks. Finally, a tribute to Lemmy.
In today’s show we have the new music from the hard rock band Radio Moscow from Iowa and we introduce the new band from the Medway area, The Galileo 7. John Hiatt is back with an excellent new algum called Terms of My Surrender. Also, Mark Lanegan is preparing a new record with his band, and as an advance, a new single and a live recording came out recently. Janiva Magness is an excellent blues rock singer who just recently decided to make an album of original material for her own label. In some ways, this is her most personal album ever, titled simply Original. Also, we jump to the letter “W” in our regular segment called Blues Alphabet because the news comes to us that Johnny Winter passed away on July 16 this year.
Today we say goodbye to two rock’n’roll artists from two different eras, but equally revered here at the Little Lighthouse. Bill Doss, one of the founders of Olivia Tremor Control and Elephant Six collective passed away on July 30th this year. He was only 43. Also, legendary Motowon bassist Bob Babbitt passed away on July 16th from the damages caused by brain cancer. He was 74. John Hiatt is here with the new record and we also have two more new artists today. Snowgoose is a band from Scotland, fronted by their wonderful singer Anna Sheard. Christian Bland from Black Angels and Lee Blackwell from Night Beats have a new duet out there in Austin called The UFO Club.
Today’s show goes out to the two blues musicians which we lost within one single week (not in the same day as I said in the show). First Keef Hartley went away, English drummer who has worked in the late 60s with several different bands, most notably his own Keef Hartley band. Then Hubert Sumlin, the legendary Chicago blues pioneer left as well. It’s sad to see them go, so we remember their work in today’s show.
Here we are again – another usually unusual episode of The Little Lighthouse. We have a brand new Mose Allison record, which he recorded with help of Joe Henry. John Hiatt has a new record The Open Road. Neo-blues duet The Pack A.D. also have a new record We Kill Computers. A great cd also came out this month for The Model Prisoners, which was a band for Sonny Vincent and Bobby Stinson after he left The Replacements. Bobby died in 1995, but a collection of recordings with various fidelity came out only now. Aleksandar made an interview with Sonny. As Sweet Apple is preparing for their debut album on April 20th, an mp3 containing one of the songs from the album was distributed around. We hear that mp3, the song I’ve Got A Feeling.
The new Laura Cantrell’s album deals with means of transportation. Trains, boats, planes… One of the songs on it is Merle Haggard’s Silver Wings and we check out several versions of it in today’s show. We also make two quick runs through the John Hiatt and Hold Steady songbooks, including their brand new albums. The show ends with Danish band Cola Freaks that I saw live last year. They Will be coming back to the USA (and Cleveland) in August.
