Today we are saying goodbye to one of the greatest sound engineers in the world for rock’n’roll. Geoff Emerick passed away last week at the age of 72. We listen to some the music he recorded, but we also check out a good dose of new stuff. Alejandro Escovedo teamed up with Don Antonio Gramentieri from Sacri Cuori on a new album and Peter Perrett of The Only Ones is somewhere out there to help as well. Paul Collins of The Beat is back with the new record as well. Aaron Lee Tasjan, man from the heart of Ohio with a stellar biography of collaborations with Kevn Kinney and New York Dolls is also back with the new album. We introduce a retro band from California, The Sound Reasons, Luke Tuchscherer from UK via New York City, buddies of Paul Weller over in UK, Stone Foundation and the new singer songwriter Curtis Roush.
This show starts with Paint Fumes from Charlotte, NC. Then we check out the new album by Ty Segall, done to support the American Civil Liberties Union. His friend over in California, Kelley Stoltz is also back with the new record. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard must be the busiest band in the world, along with Ty Segall. They already published their third album this year, and it’s a collaboration with another Australian band called Mild High Club. King Washington is a new trio from LA and Edgar Jones comes to us from UK. Andy Gabbard has a new record called Plenum Castle. Last week we heard David Nance with is take on the Beatles, and this week we hear his own epic tune called Ambulance.
Today we have new music from Melvins, who covered Beatles on their new album Basses Loaded. Also, Turkish band Hayvanlar Alemi is finally back with the new single after several years of hiatus. Talking about Turkish sound, Los Angeles band Blaak Heat is inspired by it so much, that their new album sounds like it was recorded in Turkey. We also introduce Safeties from Cleveland and Sulfur City from Canada.
Today we have two big comebacks. Mudhoney are back with the new album Vanishing Point after five years and Godfathers are back after 18 years wutg a new record Jukebox Fury. We also present the Rain, a new name from Norway, a trio obsessed with The Beatles. Another new name today is Purling Hiss from Philadelphia. We also have announcements for new records from Thalia Zedek (ex Come) and Michael Tarbox (ex Tarbox Ramblers). Mark Lanegan joined forces with London based musician Duke Garwood on a new record called Black Pudding.
Today we say the last goodbyes to Kevin Ayers of Soft Machine and Tony Sheridan who sang with The Beatles back in their Hamburg days. The two rockers passed away recently. We also have some new stuff. We have new music for the Austinites Kelly Willis and her husband Bruce Robison and our good friend Kim Simpson. They all have new records out. Billy Childish has recently put out a record with his Spartan Drags, and that opens out new show. Donovan put out a record that he started making in 1970 with John Phillips and The Jazz Crusaders. Mikal Cronin has a new single out. We also have Freedy Johnston from his recent gig in Cleveland and one new name: Colleen Green from Oakland CA.
In out past seasons we had four shows where we featured songs that we identified as anthems of rock’n’roll. Those are the songs that bands keep turning to through the entire history of this music, tunes that define the very fabric of rock music. Previously we featured Louie Louie, I Fought The Law, Tobacco Road and Train Kept A-Rollin’. Today we have Money (That’s What I Want). The song originally came out in 1959. It is not completely clear who is the author. Around the same time, two nearly identical songs came out, one by John Lee Hooker and the other one by Barrett Strong, written by Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford. The latter version is definitely more famous and also it’s the earliest hit single on Tamla (which soon became Tamla Motown). It’s possible that song is neither Gordy/Bradford or Hooker’s, maybe it’s something that has traditional roots in early rhythm and blues. In any case, fantastic piano riff and material lyrics became one of the main inspirations and many various bands made covers, and it’s a rock standard that was covered both by Beatles and The Stones. Most recently, Peter Case reused this riff on his latest record and retooled it as I Ain’t Got No Dough. All in all, today we go through no less than 20 different versions of this fantastic songs that spans the entire history of rock.
