Our Native Daughters

When Allison Russell, Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla and Amythyst Kiah founded Our Native Daughters in 2019, it was a revelation. Three of those amazing performers are shaking things up again in the music world with interesting new music. Their close collaborator Luther Dickinson also has a new album and we have a large block dedicated to all of them. We also check out new blues scene from Italy, especially new music fom Fabrizio Poggi and Messa. Don Howland, Annie Keating, Betty Lavette and Tracy Nelson are also back with new music.

We dig into Memphis neo-traditionalists, Luther Dickinson collaborates with Amy Helm, Amy LaVere, Sharde Thomas and the Como Mamas as Sisters of the Strawberry Moon and another four of his friends, Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell, perform together as Our Native Daughters. Also down south, our good friend Kim Simpson has a new album and we check out Helen Rose for the first time in our show. Another husband-and-wife duet, Mark Nicholas and Alison Cotton over in UK, is presented here for the first time as The Left Outsides. We know nothing of Palmyra Delran’s marital status, but she is also back with the new album and almost every song out there features someone to help her in a duet. Speaking of duets, Colin Linden teamed up with Luther Dickinson, and we check that out in this episode. Neko Case has a new record, as well as her bandmate from the Blacky Ranchette project, Richard Buckner. Mark Lanegan is back as well with a new record consisting entirely of covers aptly called Imitations. Let’s not forget the cow punk legends Hickoids from Austin who recently gave us two new records, one a cover record called Kicking It With The Twits and also Hairy Charin’ Ape Suit that contains new songs. Finally Dickinson brothers have a new record with the North Mississippi Allstars, called World Boogi Is Coming, which were one of the last words of their father Jim before he died. The record contains a new version of Brownsville with Sid Selvidge who recently passed away and who many years ago sang this tune also with Jim in Mud Boy and The Neutrons.

We also have one new lady in the show today. She is Ariane Mahryke Lemire and she comes from Edmonton, Canada. Eamon McGrath joins her on a song that we check out today. We know Valerie June from her last year’s collaboration The Wandering with Luther Dickinson, Shannon McNally and Amy LaVere. She now has a solo album out, produced by Dan Auerbach. We also have one new tune for King Khan. Finally, we say goodbye to Dejan Kostic, a musician from Belgrade who played in two very interesting new wave bands, Grupa i and Du Du A. Sadly, he passed away last week.

The ShivasNew supergroup today: David Hidalgo from Los Lobos, Luther Dickinson from North Mississippi Allstars and Mato Nanji join forces on a new album together called Three Skulls And The Truth. We have also the new non-album single from Natural Child and a track from a new LP for Suzi Chunk. The new names today are The Shivas from Portland and Forty Nineteens from LA. Famous tribute to the great late Arizona guitarist Rainer Ptacek called The Inner Flame has been reissued with some tracks missing and some new tracks. We check it all out today.

Kelly HoganUnfortunately, today we say goodbye to two great rock musicians who died recently. First of all, Tim Mooney who was in American Music Club passed away on June 15th. Then, most recently, Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord also passed away a month later, on July 16th. We remember them both today. Lil’ Band O’ Gold are also back with a new record after 12 years, this time dedicated to the good old Fats Domino. Redd Kross are back rocking their heads off with the new record called Researching The Blues. Luther Dickinson is quite busy recently. First he prepared a collection of live recordings that he and his brother recorded with his father Jim Dickinson shortly before his death. Also, there’s a new band for Luther himself, a supergroup The Wandering that consists of Shannon McNally, Amy LaVere, Valerie June and Sharde Thomas. Kevn Kinney is also busy. After his great solo record earlier this year, he also reformed his old band Drivin n’ Cryin’. Kelly Hogan, who we know from Jody Grind and as a backup singer for  is also back. She has a new record I Like To Keep Myself in Pain. And let us not forget Turf War – a new band from Atlanta, live in CLE!
