We bring you new music from some good old groups that we used to like in the 80s: Thurston Moore and Paul Roessler and Howe Gelb with his one man project Arizona Amp And The Alternator. We also introduce new bands from Melbourne, Australia – Brad Pot, Philadelphia PA – The Improbables, Nashville TN – Blackfoot Gypsies. I am especially excited about the newly discovered recordings from Gun Club, which are not assembled into their posthumous album entitled In My Room. Old Crow Medicine Show (and Little Lighthouse!) celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan’s masterpiece Blonde on Blonde. So many good albums have their 50th anniversary this year! 1967 was insane.
Today we start off by checking out the new music for two legends: first Robyn Hitchcock and a song from his untitled new record and a new single from Mark Lanegan and his band. Also, two of the Kinks brothers are here with new records. Ray Davies joined forces with The Jayhawks and Dave Davies has a record with his son Ross. We introduce The Wooden Sky from Toronto in Canada and two new bands from Cleveland. First four ladies in Goldmines, among which Roseanna Safos and Mandy Look also joined forces with Jason Look in another Cleveland band Part-Time Lover. We also hear a tune from Part-Time Lover performed live at The Blue Arrow Records on the Record Store Day. Speaking of the Record Store Day, an interesting seven inch showed up with Mike Watt collaborating with three bands from The Balkans. Today we check out what Koja and Disciplin A Kitchme did to a Minutemen song!
We start the show with the new rhythm and blues band from Memphis, Southern Avenue. They we check out the new tune for Janiva Magness. We also check out the music from Rickie Lee Jones and Madeleine Peyroux, who are collaboration on a new tour together. The New Pornographers have a new record and so does the singer of The Ettes, Coco Hames. Guided By Voices recorded a new, lengthy double album too. But a special treat today is a block in which we check out separate projects of each new member of Ty Segall’s band. Charles Mootheart has a new CFM album and so does Emmet Kelly with his Cairo Gang. We introduce the pianist Ben Boye and his band Joshua Abrams And Natural Information Society, who also have a new album out.
A lot of new names for us this time. We start off with Jon McKiel of Canada. We also introduce Bonny Doon from Detroit, Cory Branan from Mississippi and Beth Bombara from St. Louis. Rob Clarke and his Wooltones sent us their brand new single, Hills from Sweden are here with the new record and Jeff Beck’s singer Imelda May has a new solo record. CJ Ramone, a man who once replaced Dee Dee Ramone in the Ramones has a solo album with The Adolescents as a backing band.
Today we start of with some bands that used to be big in the 80s: Jesus and Mary Chain and Depeche Mode. Dave Gahan seems to be inspired a lot by the sounds he created with the Soulsavers a few years ago. Todd Rundgren is also back and his new single is a collaboration with Swedish dance artists Robyn. Automatic City from France sent us their new cover of Chuck Berry’s Havana Moon. We introduce two new bands from England, Mulholland from York and Mark and The Clouds from London. Zagreb’s Trobecove Krusne Peci are back with a live album recorded at the Club Kocka. Speaking of live albums and clubs, there’s a new various artists deal called Start Your Own Fucking Show Space, which pays a tribute to a club in Brooklyn called Death by Audio. Also, live in Cleveland, Kevin Gordon plays his new tune.
Today we start off with the recently reunited Australian 80s band Ratcat. Then we check out Sweet Apple covering April Wine, just as they are preparing the new album Sing The Night in Sorrow, which is due this Summer (but you know how those things always get delayed…). NE-HI are a new band from Chicago and Samantha Fish is hailing from Kansas City with her cigar box guitar. Arbouretum are back with the new record and so is Rodney Crowell. Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang is back with the new record, as a result of collaboration with Ty Segall. Jaye Jayle is a new name for us from Louisville, KY!
Today we celebrate life and times of the great Chuck Berry! We lost him last weekend. I think he is basically the reason we have rock’n’roll today. If you hear some new band and you can’t hear Chuck Berry in their sound, at least a little bit, then it’s not rock’n’roll. All the greats were immensely influenced by Chuck. His guitar riff is the very fiber of the rock’n’roll fabric. He turned lyrics into poetry. He made rock’n’roll art and he was the first one to do it. We will hear a bunch of covers of Chuck’s greatest songs from a wild variety of artists today in his honor. Rest in peace, master!
