Remember when a couple of weeks ago we announced Danny and The Doorknobs phenomenal comeback album? That band is perhaps much better known in the rock’n’roll history books as Trotsky Icepick. Only two months after the return with Juebox in LA River, Trotsky Icepick is back with an album with the moniker they are much better known for and we check it out in today’s show. Another astonishing comeback is the new single for the queercore royalties Team Dresch. Much like Trotsky Icepick, City of Cool from Australia also have a new album in a very short term. King Khan also has a new album out. Connections, a band from Columbus who had an album of the year in 2016 also had a recent new album called Foreign Affairs and we check that out today. Mark Lanegan is about to put out his new record, but as we wait for it, we hear his new tune with the guitarist of Lamb of God, Mark Morton. Cleveland Steamers have a new politically charged single and Snooze in Motion, over in Zagreb have a new fake live album called Red Wednesday.

Today we introduce some new bands: Ladrones come from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Model Zero comes from Memphis TN, The Viles from Chico, California and The Sweet Things from New York City. Also, Exit 114. That last band comes also from New York City and the drummer in the band is Bobo, son of Dan Stuart who we had a chance to see playing live in Cleveland with his father. Coming back, we have Mi Nerve from Zagreb who have a new EP and Perry Farrell (formerly of Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros). But the real gem for this show is the new record for Guadalupe Plata from Spain, which shines with tribal drumming and voodoo atmosphere.

Two guys that sang most beautifully about demons, zombies, werewolves and voodoo were Roky Erickson and Dr. John. By a cruel game of coincidence we lost both of them in the past two weeks. While Roky arguably was always more on the other side of life than here, Dr. John’s playful usage of voodoo, zombies and werewolves was drenched in the superstitions of his native New Orleans and South Louisiana wetlands, rather than his belonging to the beyond. But the most exciting thing by far is the return album from one of my favorite 80s bands Danny And The Doorknobs. It’s a very surprising return to a band that existed shortly under that name, and is way better known as Trotsky Icepick. Their old album Poison Summer is one of the hidden 80s jewels and their new album might be even better than that. Definitely the most pleasant surprise this year and possibly the greatest return album since Mission of Burma’s ONoffON.
