In today’s episode, we have some news from my ol’ hometurf. We found out some info about the new harmonica player in Disciplin A Kitchme. His name is Igor, he lives in Vinkovci and has his own one man band called Harp Explosion. Check out his new spectacular album on
We start off in a blues mood. First we have a Danish band from Copenhagen, Baby Woodrose. Their sound, half garage, half blues, is a perfect opener. Then we go deeper in blues. Steve Hill is a great guitar player from Canada and Eden Brent is a singer from Mississippi. Then we have Daddy Long Legs, who had a popular album two years ago with Evil Eyes On You and now they’re back with a new one Blood From A Stone. Towards the end we check out some new reissues with Paul Westerberg and The Shivvers and finish things off with a power pop band Ginnels from Ireland and the new record for Robyn Hitchcock which consists half of covers and half of originals. Don’t forget to stop by Blue Arrow Records. Among many cool vintage vinyl you can find one of my favorite records or all times, Tim Lee And Matt Piucci Gone Fishin’. I will try to feature one Blue Arrow LP each week.
Mike Watt is a rock’n’roll sailor and now his in the boat with two Italian fratello’s Andrea Belfi and Stefano Pilia. Their band Il Sogno Del Marinaio has a new record out called Canto Secondo and they are about to embark on a big American tour. Before you catch them in your town, here they are at the Little Lighthouse. Talking about Italians, there’s a new band out from over there called Sultan’s Bathery. They were also on the tour in the ol’ US of A just recently. John Mayall has a new record and since we’re at the letter M in our Blues Alphabet, it’s the right time to spend some airtime on this great British bluesman. John Doe has a new best off record and it also contains two brand new songs. We feature one of them today. Also, somehow the news of Peter Banks passing away escaped me last year, so we pay a little tribute to the legendary guitarist of Syn, Yes and Flash.
Great news today! From this show on, we are underwritten by one of the best record shops in the world,
It’s a heavy show today. We start off with OBN III’s from Austin TX, lead by Orville Bateman Neeley III. Their new album Third Time To Harm, which is loud add diverse love letter to rock’n’roll. Speaking about rocking, one of the strongest bands in Yugoslavia was The Spoons from Pula. Their singer Bruno Subiotto continued his career as a singer in numerous bands, and also as an actor. His new band is called Roger N. Out which we feature in today’s show. San Pedro Slim is also a new name in our show. He comes from San Pedro, sings the blues and plays a mean harmonica. Chuck Prophet’s new single is also featured today. It’s a heavy show today, but we finish with an incredible, soft new arrangement of Laura Nyro’s Been On A Train. This features Rickie Lee Jones on vocals and will be out on the upcoming Billy Child’s record Reimagining Laura Nyro.
We have some hot reissues this time from the Numero Group. As a continuation of their Nikki Sudden reissues, we also now have the first Jacobites reissues, the first lp and Robespierre’s Velvet Basement. Another hot reissue on the same label is Texan hard rock band Josefus with their 1970 loud masterpiece Dead Man. We also have some interesting new records. Brian Olive, who used to be with The Greenhornes and Soledad Brothers, now has a new EP called Move. We introduce The Ugly Beats from Austin TX and Rat Columns for the first time at The Little Lighthouse. Rock’n’roll megastars J Mascis and Ty Segall have new records each and Mark Lanegan had put out the new EP as an advance for the upcoming new record in the Fall this year.
We start of rocking hard. Mojo Magazine came up with the third instalment of their Heavy Nuggets and it sounds heavier than ever. Then we have a new name from Sweden – a hard rocking band Blues Pills fronted by Elin Larsson. Twin Peaks hail from Chicago and have a new album Wild Onion. Then we have a nice pair from Hozac – two singles and two new bands, 999999999 from the US and Southern Comfort from Australia, lead by Harriet Hudson and Angie Bermuda (also in Straight Arrows). One of the strongest albums this year so far is a duet by Lydia Lunch and Cypress Grove, entitle simply A Fistful of Desert Blues. They recorded a bunch of punky blues songs and it’s really strong. Then we have Richard Thompson with a new acoustic solo record in which he revisits his classics. But probably the coolest little bit today comes out in our Live in CLE segment. Today we have a brand new band from Cleveland called Monday Sound and it’s put together by Tom Fallon (New Salem Witch Hunters) and Brent Ferguson (Living Stereo). They covered no less than two Jackie DeShannon songs on their first gig ever and my recorder was handy…
Today we introduce two new names from Australia. Andy Kentler and the Metal Babies from Sydney. We also introduce Paul Myers and John Moremen from San Francisco. Their name is of course The Paul and John, which I guess is a pretty fortunate combination. But an album that will blow your mind this week is a duet by the legendary Chris Cacavas and Edward Abbiati. Cacavas is of course one of the founding members of The Green On Red and Abbiati is a rocker from Switzerland. And don’t loose out of your sites a new band from Salt Lake City called Six Weeks In The Pine.
In today’s show we have the new music from the hard rock band Radio Moscow from Iowa and we introduce the new band from the Medway area, The Galileo 7. John Hiatt is back with an excellent new algum called Terms of My Surrender. Also, Mark Lanegan is preparing a new record with his band, and as an advance, a new single and a live recording came out recently. Janiva Magness is an excellent blues rock singer who just recently decided to make an album of original material for her own label. In some ways, this is her most personal album ever, titled simply Original. Also, we jump to the letter “W” in our regular segment called Blues Alphabet because the news comes to us that Johnny Winter passed away on July 16 this year.
