Outrageous Cherry – The Digital Age (Burger) and Danny And The Darleans – Stink (Nero’s Neptune)

Outrageous Cherry and Danny and The Darleans reviewMatthew Smith is a long time fixture on Detrot rock’n’roll scene. For years, his music is very well informed with all those genres that make rock music so exciting for all of us. His band with a revolving membership, Outrageous Cherry has been proving that for the past 20 years with some 15 odd albums. This year’s album Digital Age is in many ways a special one.

First, it comes after a four year break in discography – the longest one so far on Smith’s list. But sometimes, making a longer break like that can result in a very positive result. A bunch of songs piled up and Digital Age can be heard as the most consistent Outrageous Cherry album in my memory.

Smith’s songwriting is super clever and catchy. Lots of songs deal with the modern times and even some politics. Very engaging stuff, but not overwhelming. The music contains a lot of cool guitars and vocals are drenched in powerful reverbs and phasing. The bass player Colleen Burke also did a great job on it.

Talking about Colleen, she is also in Danny And The Darleans – another really cool Detroit band that had a record recently. Just by looking at the cover, I think it’s titled Stink, but it appears title-less on some other listings out there.

Danny of course is Danny Kroha who was with The Gories and Demolition Doll Rods. He’s taking the main stage on this new trio – the spotlight is on him this time. Stink contains some strong garage rock material and it really stands out in the ambitious tune Les Fleurs Du Mal.

Stink by Danny And The Darleans and Digital Age by Outrageous Cherry are two strongest records from Detroit in 2014, which will obviously remain as one of the strongest rock’n’roll towns. Both bands contain Colleen Burke on bass and both records are recorded in mono. Really great stuff!

Mary Margaret O'Hara We start off rocking out to the new band from Japan called The Novice. They have a new single out on Dirtnap Records. Then we move on to an old Kansas power pop band called The Tunes. Their material is recently reissued on an LP called Love Uncool on Cheap Rewards. Plastic Pals from Sweden have an excellent new single and Pat Todd of the Lazy Cowgirls fame is back with the new band called The Rankoutsiders and the album 14th and Nowhere is a sweaty rock’n’roll record. We have some news from The Gories headquarters. Their old bootleg The Shaw Tapes saw a proper release on Third Man Records and their guitar player Dan Kroha has a new band Danny and The Darleans. We also have some news from the Yugosphere. Partibrejkers from Belgrade are back with the new single and Overflow from Koprivnica have a new record which features Mihovil Pavlek MiÅ¡kina’s. MiÅ¡kina was killed in a concentration camp 70 years ago. Jimmy Haber is a new name from the power-pop scene in Australia. His new album New Bondi Hippies has some catchy tunes spiced up with politically conscientious lyrics. Doug Paisley is a singer songwriter from Canada. A lot of people talk about him these days. What I find particularly interesting is that he pulled out of darkness reclusive Canadian singer Mary Margaret O’Hara who has a significant space on his new record. She had a landmark album back in the 80s called Miss America.

In our Live in Cleveland segment, we have two songs recorded at the Cleveland club Happy Dog. It’s one of my favorite places to go out to. They have an excellent assortment of hot dogs with rich sides and live music few times a week. The segment goes out to Sean Kilbane, founder of this club, who tragically passed away recently.

The Goldebriars – No More Auction Block;
The Novice – What You Want;
The Tunes – Love Uncool;
The Fuzz – Merry-Go-Round;

Lazy Cowgirls – Anymore;
Pierced Arrows – Frankenstein (Live in CLE);

Albert Collins – Avalanche (Blues Alphabet);
The Gories – Nautiloid Reef;
Danny And The Darleans – Can’t Kill the Rooster;
Partibrejkers – Sitna lova;
Overflow – Pjesma medjimurskog zlatara;
