We start off today with a tribute to Husker Du. Two Canadian bands, Red Arms and Wasted Potential put their resources together and made a coll tribute to Husker Du. The whole thing is on their bandcamp account, available for a free download. Another free download that you might want to consider is by The Babies – a really cool band from Zagreb who had a wonderful vinyl LP 10 years ago and now, the band offers it officially in a digital format. The Babies are long time defunct, but some of their members how play as Thee Melomen. They also have a cool cover of Husker Du! We also have new tunes by Built Do Spill from Boise ID and Warm Soda from Austin TX. We also have a nice block from Danny Kroha (ex Gories), with music from his new album and recent performances live in Cleveland. Matthew Smith is a long time fixture on Detrot rock’n’roll scene. For years, his music is very well informed with all those genres that make rock music so exciting for all of us. His band with a revolving membership, Outrageous Cherry has been proving that for the past 20 years with some 15 odd albums. This year’s album Digital Age is in many ways a special one.
We start off rocking out to the new band from Japan called The Novice. They have a new single out on Dirtnap Records. Then we move on to an old Kansas power pop band called The Tunes. Their material is recently reissued on an LP called Love Uncool on Cheap Rewards. Plastic Pals from Sweden have an excellent new single and Pat Todd of the Lazy Cowgirls fame is back with the new band called The Rankoutsiders and the album 14th and Nowhere is a sweaty rock’n’roll record. We have some news from The Gories headquarters. Their old bootleg The Shaw Tapes saw a proper release on Third Man Records and their guitar player Dan Kroha has a new band Danny and The Darleans. We also have some news from the Yugosphere. Partibrejkers from Belgrade are back with the new single and Overflow from Koprivnica have a new record which features Mihovil Pavlek MiÅ¡kina’s. MiÅ¡kina was killed in a concentration camp 70 years ago. Jimmy Haber is a new name from the power-pop scene in Australia. His new album New Bondi Hippies has some catchy tunes spiced up with politically conscientious lyrics. Doug Paisley is a singer songwriter from Canada. A lot of people talk about him these days. What I find particularly interesting is that he pulled out of darkness reclusive Canadian singer Mary Margaret O’Hara who has a significant space on his new record. She had a landmark album back in the 80s called Miss America.
We have several new things this week. Daniel Kroha from Gories has a new solo ep in blues style called The Folk-Blues Stylings. The Sky Drops is a new band at the Little Lighthouse that comes from Delaware. Their new ep Making Mountains is exceptional. Natural Child is another new band that comes from Nashville. We introduce them here. Mark Lanegan’s new album Blues Funeral is just about to come out, so we sample it in this show with one new song. Holly Renee Allen is a folk/rock singer from Virginia with a wonderful voice. She teamed up with Martin Kearns on her new album Red Dirt Soul. Leonard Cohen also pulled out an excellent album called Old Friends. We also have a brand new song by the swam-pop zydeco musician Rosie Ledet.
