Today, music from Yugoslavia or whatever was left from it. No special reason other than some interesting new tunes from over there and recent obituaries. From Macedonia, we check out 21 Vek, their new single. Rebel Star operates in Serbia and Hungary and now collaborates with Zagreb’s Zvonka Obajdin. Also in Zagreb, Croatia, Nina Romi? is back with the new single. Koikoi is a new name for us, a four piece from Belgrade Serbia. Then we zig zag back to Zagreb and check out Confidential & The Secret Four. Then we end up all the way North in Slovenia and introduce Matthias von Stumberger und seine Jugend. We pay tributes to fallen Yugo rock representatives, Marina Tucakovi? who was a lyricist for many popular songs, singer songwriter and TV presenter Minja Subota. Also musicians Sanja Ili? and Zafir Hažimanov.

New music took us strange places this time. I recently came across a band from Barcelona, Spain, by the name of Belgrado, with a Polish singer that takes up the visual identity of Yugoslavian Zenitism movement and sounds like they are from Rijeka, cca 1983. Then, we also check out a Welsh band that named themselves after my old hometown, Vukovar. Back in that old part of the world, we also get new music from Nina Romić and PunÄke. The rest of the show also brings the new albums from Calexico, as well as a new collaboration between Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. We also introduce some new names for us. Big Eyes lead by Kate Eldridge come from New York City and the singer-songwriter Shawna Russel hails from Oklahoma.

We have two new heavy rock albums to start off today. Hush or Howl by Black Pistol Fire of Toronto and Austin and Get Pure by Mount Carmel from Columbus. Thee Melomen come from Zagreb, and they are basically Backstreet Brats re-branded. Pridjevi are from around there as well – studio trio which consists of Nina Romić, Dino Santaleza and Ivana Picek. Sally Crewe from Austin TX has a new ep with a cover of XTC’s Making Plans for Nigel. Doug Gillard is a guest guitar hero on it. The Hold Steady are back with the new record. For those who like mellower sounds, we have Kevin Kane from Toronto with his charming cover of Simon And Garfunkel’s Cathy and Allysen Callery re-imagines Gordon Lighfoot’s Sundown.
Today’s spotlight is on the neo-acoustic music scene in former Yugoslavia. There was a huge folk movement also known over there as akusticari in the early to mid seventies. It seems as that scene is being revived. We already presented Belgrade’s On Tour some time ago, and today we have two more new names. Irena Žilić is a young singer songwriter from Zagreb with her modern and fresh take on western folk music. Nina Romić, also from Zagreb, is on the other hand more rooted in the local folklore. In this episode, she covers a song written originally by Satan Panonski – a hard blood shock punk from the eighties who was both influential and controversial at the same time. Nina’s cover is a part of a larger tribute called OÄi u magli. We also have a new album by our old friends from Rijeka My Buddy Moose. Their style is more on the roots rock side. Their new album Shine Shine Shine is produced by Chris Eckman from The Walkabouts, who also lives in that neck of the woods these days – Ljubljana. The Walkabouts have a live album called Berlin and we check that out as well in this show. Elsewhere form Europe, Amsterdam, we have an instrumental outfit called Bevel Emboss who create a wonderful tapestry of guitar sounds on their new album called Celluloid. Back to America – we have Arbouretum from Baltimore for the first time and super-group Sweet Apple have a new single out there which announces their album due this Spring around the Record Store Day. Mark Lanegan is a guest vocalist!
