Today’s show is dedicated to Sid Selvidge. He was a part of the Mud Boy and The Neutrons, a group of highly influential Memphis musicians. Lee Baker on guitar and Jim Dickinson on piano both passed away relatively recently, and Sid, who was the lead singer, just died in May this year. He was an incredible talent and a great singer who did not put out a lot of records, but nevertheless, influenced many. We also have Bassholes with their new record called Boogieman Stew and King Khan also with his new record called Idle No More. We also introduce a new super-group, consisting of Eddie Munoz from Plimsouls, Clem Burke from Blondie and Keith Streng from Fleshtones. It’s called The Split Squad. Our Australian favorites, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizzard are back with a new Internet single, a cover of T. Rex song Lean Woman Blues.

We start off with the new band in the show today. Their name is Mouthbreathers and they come from Lawrence, KY. Another new band for us is The Fish, which don’t play together anymore. Their leader Chuck is now in Nude Beach, which is also a guest at our Live in CLE segment. We also have one new lady in the show today. She is Ariane Mahryke Lemire and she comes from Edmonton, Canada. Eamon McGrath joins her on a song that we check out today. We know Valerie June from her last year’s collaboration The Wandering with Luther Dickinson, Shannon McNally and Amy LaVere. She now has a solo album out, produced by Dan Auerbach. We also have one new tune for King Khan. Finally, we say goodbye to Dejan Kostic, a musician from Belgrade who played in two very interesting new wave bands, Grupa i and Du Du A. Sadly, he passed away last week.
Today we say the last goodbye to the great banjo player Doug Dillard and one of the Bee Gees – Robin Gibb. Both of them passed away recently and we owe a lot to each of them for the development of rock’n’roll and popular music in general. Other than that, we check out mainly some new singles, eps – short form in general. John Doe and Exene have a new one, recorded with minimal arrangements in the studio. Richard Buckner has a new three-track ep called Willow. And then come the rockers. The Intelligence from Seattle and Nobunny have new 45s. The Paperhead from Nashville sport a lovely Syd Barrett styled single from a split EP with Mikal Cronin (among others). King Khan also splits a 45 with Mikal. Only LP tracks are by the Dillard and Clark and The Beegees today!
So, Beach Boys finished Smile… I don’t know exactly what to think of it. This album probably never even had a clear vision, and it’s unclear how you can complete it with chaotic pieces that the Boys recorded back in the day. Still, the concept behind it is so intriguing that it will hunt the rock’n’roll forever. It hunts me too. In this show, a portion of the playlist is delivered in Smile format, with a lot of cutting and pasting. Check it out from 14:28 to 28:16 in part 1. We explore the history of Cleveland’s underground scene by digging out a 1979 unreleased tune by the group called The Radiation Factory. Los Lobos have a new album where they cover Disney tunes. We also hear one tune from the latest Tom Waits live album called Glitter and Doom. I secretly hoping that Eagles of Death Metal cover Goin’ Out WestM one time in their career…
