Sadly, in the past week we lost three important characters in this play we call rock’n’roll. Leonard Cohen, Leon Russell and Billy Miller. Leonard and Leo need no description, but Billy Miller might not be well known to a casual rock consumer. Yet, he was one of the founders of Norton Records – a greatly influential label in the past 20 years or so that brought us many of the hidden rock gems. In addition to that we hear new music from Å tajner Bend in Zagreb, Croatia, Bad Beats, from Vancouver, Doyle Bramhall II and James McMurtry, both from Texas. Also we introduce The Mobbs in UK and Happiness – an offshoot of Deer Tick lead by brothers Chris and Dennis Ryan.
Kevin Gordon – Goodnight Brownie Ford;

Today we start off with a one man band from Utrecht in Netherlands, Robbing Banks. Then we have a new super-group called Diamond Rugs consisted of John McCauley and Robbie Crowell from Deer Tick, Ian Saint Pé from Black Lips and Steve Berlin from Los Lobos. Then we hear two different tributes to The Rolling Stones – one by Broadway Lafayette and the other from Shiny Darkly. Low Cut Connie has a new single. R. Stevie Moore joins forces with Jason Falkner (ex Three O’Clock) for a one-time album called Make It Be. Finally, new exciting band from Macedonia, Bernays Propaganda closes the show today.
New names in today’s show is the Portuguese duet called New Kind of Mambo and The Horrors from Cedar Rapids in Iowa. New Kind of Mambo has a new ep on their bandcamp page (free download) and Horrors have a new album called Vent produced by one of the heroes of this show Greg Cartwright. Tough Shits is another new band today with a self titled album. Deer Tick have new ep called Tim and we check it out in today’s show, by exploring connections between John McCauley and Paul Westerberg. Howe Gelb expanded the line up of his Giant Sand and now they are Giant Giant Sand – 12 people total in the new line up. Giant indeed. Freedy Johnston, Jon Dee Graham and Susan Cowsill put the record out as The Hobart Brothers and Lil’ Sis Hobart. We heard them all together for the first time a year ago in Flashlite 123 and now their first official album At Least We Have Each Other is out.
Today we remember Jet Harris, the original bass player for The Shadows. He died on March 18 this year. We also have two new supergroups today. Middle Brother consists of members from musicians that normally play in Deer Tick, Dawes and Delta Spirit. They have a great new album, which I think surpasses everything they did in their individual bands. The other supergroup is Obits, which consists of former members of Hot Snakes and Edsel. We know their previous album I Blame You very well at the Little Lighthouse, and now they have a new one called Moody Standard and Poor.
