Today we start off with the new music from Pat Todd and his Rankoutsiders. They have a new single out. We also introduce the new band Bat Fangs for Betsy Wright, who was in Ex Hex and Laura King, who was in Moaners. We also introduce Number Ones from London UK and Gary Ritchie from Austin TX, both in the realm of power pop. Daniel Romano is back with three new albums, two are solo, Human Touch and Neverless and one is with his Ancient Shapes, Silent Rave. Kramer joined forces with Bill Frisell for the new installment of tributes to the songs that came out of The Brill Building in New York City.
The Little Lighthouse presents best albums in 2017. A good way to usher the new year is to put together a list of best albums in the previous one. We’ve been doing this for a long time with more or less discipline, but the criteria is always personal and the lists simply collects albums that I’ve kept coming back to most frequently. This time we cover positions 35-15 and tune in next week for the top 14. Today we cover one of four albums that was put together by the productive and controversial Matthew Melton (Warm Soda), heavier rock records from The Obsessed, Elder, Motorpsycho All The Witches and Ruby The Hatchet show a modern approach to head banging, twisted Americana of Ethan Daniel Davidson, Yawpers and My Buddy Moose represent a fresh approach to a genre that needs reinvention badly. Strong lyrical works from Daniel Romano and John Wesley Coleman III are the best to enjoy while reading and musing on the inner sleeves. Bully, Lost Balloons, Sheer Mag, Needles//Pins show that indie rock still has something to say. Beautiful vocals of Dead Rock West are to admire. Ty Segall had an album of his career. Baby Shakes simply have short and fun record that makes you wanna play on and on. Newcomers Improbables and experienced Golden Boys hail from their garages with high octane garage rock and of all experiments from King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, their Microtonal Banana was the most fun.
Today we have a brand new epic double album by Melvins, apparently the last album for Matthew Melton’s Warm Soda, new one for Miranda Lee Richards. We introduce Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Feral Ohms and School Damage. Daniel Romano and his Ancient Shapes are live in Cleveland. We pay a very special respect to the late Belgrade composer Milivoje Mića Marković, a man who had a tremendous impact on the Yugoslav music scene with his jazz fusion, soundtracks and journalism.
New stuff today comes from Justin Townes Earle with his new record and Daniel Romano from Welland, Canada. Black Lips from Atlanta have a new record and so does John Németh, blues singer from Boise, ID. We also introduce Chris Bathgate from the Detroit area and a Californian singer songwriter Jade Jackson. At the very beginning of the show, we pay a small tribute to Robert Dahlqvist, a guitarist from Hellacopters who suddenly died in February this year.
