We hear the new music from Guided By Voices and Public Squares who we caught live at Blue Arrow Records. Elsewhere in America, we hear new music from Brooklyn’s A Place To Bury Strangers. We also introduce The Sueves from Chicago and The Katellas, lead by Dewey Peek, who we heard last week with Ford Madox Ford. Today we bring you the new tunes from Ghost (they have new EP), new Wovenhand and Drive By Truckers. Bill Janovitz is back with he’s brand new band The Needy Sons. Baby Woodrose is a new band from Denmark, Lecherous Gaze out from California has a new album and we introduce the English band called Field Music. Zerodent from Australia played a stellar show in Cleveland and we have a recording!
Today we begin our traditional review of the best records at the Little Lighthouse in the past year. Although “the best” should be understood in a very limited way. These records is basically just a very personal selection of new music that stuck with me this year. It may not be the best, but it somehow resonated in my mind. The time will tell whether these records will last longer than one season, but I definitely tend to go back to the stuff that I liked.
In some way, this show is the part two of the jam show we heard last time. Only two new albums today. Both of them are not so new, but I didn’t get to play them yet in the show. Motörhead has a relatively fresh album called Bad Magic which surprised me with the high quality that it brings. Also, Ghost, Swedish Satanists, had a cool album this year called Meloria. Again something, not something that I would normally go for, but really cool album nevertheless. Tune in next year for the new episode with the year-end retrospective of best albums.
New stuff from the garage rock scene comes from Zagreb, Croatia and Australia. We have Erotic Biljan and His Heretics reunited with an amazing new single that promises to reestablish this band as the leader on the ex-Yugoslav scene. Volcanics come from Perth and Terrible Truths come from Adelaide. We also check out the new indie rockers Gold-Bears. The Auteurs was a new wave band over in London. Luke Haines who was with them is back with a solo record dedicated to the New York City. John Nemeth is another new name for us. He hails from Boise ID and belts out a sound characteristic to the black Memphis scene. Ghost come from Sweden. They are a quite an attraction over in their home land. They scored a good hit last year with a Roky Erickson cover. And finally, Ian McLagan, truly legendary keyboardist of Faces and Small Faces is back with his Bump Band over in Austin TX with the new single.
