Low Cut Connie new album Hi Honey is out as of yesterday and we check out the new track that closes the album. Jimbo Mathus is back with the new record called Blue Healer. Amy Lavere has an album with Will Sexton where she goes back to her previous songs looking for a more intimate atmosphere. Boz Scaggs is back also with a really cool new record which mixes various musical genres into an entertaining blend. Mikal Cronin has returned with his 3rd solo record. We also introduce Ethan Daniel Davidson from Detroit with a recording that he made together with Danny Kroha. And finally, we sadly report that Percy Sledge has passed away.
Today we have new music from Australia. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard has a new single and we have a new band from Perth called Zerodent. Their new demos are just in fresh from over there. Today we also have two performers from Canada as well: Ron Sexsmith and The Barr Brothers. Check out the new music from My Buddy Moose from Rijeka, Croatia. I was wondering what’s happening to Mike Therieau. I really liked his album Living From A Suitcase eight years ago. I’ve found him playing with a new band called Shurman over in Austin. Finally we say goodbye to Rock Vodka, also known as David Thum, the original drummer of Tex And The Horseheads who passed away recently.
Today we continue listening to the Suicide Squeeze Records compilation with two new bands: four ladies in La Luz and Audacity from California. Out of Ireland comes Goodly Thousands. Terry Manning, legendary producer and engineer from Memphis, with a great solo album from 1969 recorded at Ardent is back with the new, low key album called Heaven Knows. And finally, Kim Fowley’s posthumous release Detroit Invasion is out. It was recorded three years before his death with the help of Matthew Smith from Outrageous Cherry, Johnny Nash from Electric Six and Troy Gregory in Detroit. What an incredible album!
Several new names today for the first time at the Little Lighthouse. We have two bands that successfully mix lighter notes with electric guitars: Hushdrops from Chicago and Dick Diver from Melbourne, Australia. Life Sized Maps come from Brooklyn and play music heavy on synthesizers. We also have Wax Idols for the first time at the Little Lighthouse, with an older song that appeared on Suicide Squeeze Records sampler. Willie Nile is back with a piano oriented record and Jon Spencer also has a new record. We say goodbye to John Renbourn of Pentangle, who passed away recently.
Unfortunately, today’s show dominates with a no less than five obituaries. We pay respects to Vlada Divljan, Andy Fraser (from Free), Sam Andrew (from Big Brother and The Holding Company), Michael Brown (from Left Banke) and Daevid Allen (from Gong).
Today we start off with a one man band from Utrecht in Netherlands, Robbing Banks. Then we have a new super-group called Diamond Rugs consisted of John McCauley and Robbie Crowell from Deer Tick, Ian Saint Pé from Black Lips and Steve Berlin from Los Lobos. Then we hear two different tributes to The Rolling Stones – one by Broadway Lafayette and the other from Shiny Darkly. Low Cut Connie has a new single. R. Stevie Moore joins forces with Jason Falkner (ex Three O’Clock) for a one-time album called Make It Be. Finally, new exciting band from Macedonia, Bernays Propaganda closes the show today.
Today’s show is another one of our vinyl junkyard editions. Just to remind you, in vinyl junkyard specials I play almost entire LPs that I found dirt cheap somewhere laying in some bargain bin at a record store. Usually the stuff comes from The Blue Arrow Records in Cleveland. Two records that inspired today’s and next week’s show are A Bunch of Stiff Records and Stiffs Live – two LPs put together by the legendary Stiff Records label back in the late 70s. We will hear almost all tracks from these two LPs. In addition to that, we will hear some 45s that came out on that legendary label. Actually, they were much better known for their 45s, but they early singles are notoriously difficult to come by in original editions and they definitely are not dirt cheap. But the LPs are easier to find and just as exciting. A lot of the stuff from Stiff records has come out on CDs by now, but listening to the original vinyl has its charm. Check out some Stiff music!
Today we introduce Rhiannon Giddens, musician who studied opera in Oberlin Conservatory here in Ohio. She has a cool cover of Elizabeth Cotten classic Shake Sugaree. Also, Eternal Tapestry come from Portland and play some trippy music. Pond from Australia also plays trippy music and we check out their new album in this show. Spanish neo-psychedelic band The See See is also represented with the new record today.
We have some nice new projects for the familiar faces at The Little Lighthouse. Jeffrey Evans (68 Comeback, Gibson Bros) plays with Ross Johnson (Panther Burns) occasional gigs in Memphis and now an album of a set they recorded back in 2008 with Jim Dickinson is finally out on a disc. Robert Pollard gathered some old Dayton friends and formed a new band called Ricked Wicky (actually the name of one of his first bands). Tim Lee and Susan Bauer celebrate a 33rd and 1/3 anniversary with an LP of the same title. We introduce some new names in this show this time: Germ House from New Mexico, Two Gallants from San Francisco and The New Piccadillys who play Mersey beat versions of well rock’n’roll standards (mostly!).
