Crowdfunding is a cool new way to help musicians make their albums ahead of time, get some special releases in return and maybe even influence the content in some ways. I mean, without your help, the stuff wouldn’t even be out. Today we introduce two artist that took the road of crowdfunding. Clara Engel is from Toronto and she’s a singer songwriter. She previously published in UK and Italy, but not in North America. She started a website on

Last week we introduced the list of 20 best LPs that we liked to listen to here at The Little Lighthouse. This week, we move on to the list of five best reissues and archival recordings that came out in or around 2012. The title goes to Tav Falco and a gorgeous reissue of Beyond the Magnolia Curtain with also included Blow Your Top EP and four pages of early history of the band. The whole list looks like this:
We start off today with the new single for Sweet Apple. It’s a cover of Alice Cooper’s Elected. Then we check out the new band from Los Angeles, Blackfeet Braves. Los Straitjackets follow with their instrumental version of Nirvana’s Teen Spirit. Then we introduce new band from Australia, The Laurels. Shivering Timbers from Akron are in our Live in Cleveland segment. We also check out the new record for legendary Graham Parker. Some new reissues/archives are out as well. Jacke Deshannon’s final installment of her 60’s singles and Dan Penn’s soulful demos.
Today’s show is dedicated to all meteor observers in the occasion of the annual Perseid meteor shower that happened last weekend. We have a large block of songs about meteors, falling stars… We also have a new single for Bob Mould which represents his return to the his synthless past. Thee Oh Sees also have a new album, which is quite conventional in form. Whispering Pines is a new band also from Cali that we check out today. They are inspired by The Band. Another premier at the Little Lighthouse is the Cincinnati band Buffalo Killers.
Interesting premier in this show is the New Multitudes album, which marks this year as a 100 years from when Woody Guthrie was born. It’s another project where the Guthrie’s estate hands out his old unseen lyrics to modern day artists to write new tunes to the old words. First project like that was back in 1998 when Jeff Tweedy and Billy Bragg joined forces on Mermaid Avenue. It’s interesting that the Guthrie’s estate approached old Tweedy’s friend from the Uncle Tupelo days, Jay Farrar. He then also approached Will Johnson from Centro-matic, Yim Yames from My Morning Jacket and Anders Parker from Varnalinen to help him out in the completion. The whole thing turned out very well, Farrar’s singing wasn’t this good in ages and tunes fit the lyrics like a glove. Starting with this show, we will begin with a new segment, Live in Cleveland, which will feature live recordings from various bands on their Cleveland shows. We start with a new song for the Cleveland roots rock band Jack Fords, the band which also premiers at the Little Lighthouse today. Whitehorse is a duet from Canada that consists of singer-songwriters Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland and we feature them for the first time at todays show. Their self titled album is full of well crafted songs. Today we have John Wesley Coleman again, this time with a new solo album Last Donkey Show. Chrome Cranks are back with the new album Ain’t No Likes In Blood. And sadly, today’s show is dedicated to Davy Jones, one of the Monkees, who passed away on February 29 this year after a sudden hear attack.
So, Beach Boys finished Smile… I don’t know exactly what to think of it. This album probably never even had a clear vision, and it’s unclear how you can complete it with chaotic pieces that the Boys recorded back in the day. Still, the concept behind it is so intriguing that it will hunt the rock’n’roll forever. It hunts me too. In this show, a portion of the playlist is delivered in Smile format, with a lot of cutting and pasting. Check it out from 14:28 to 28:16 in part 1. The rest of the show brings you new tunes from King Khan and Electric Six. We also have new names Jerusalem and the Starbaskets, Barrarecudas, and The Excitements. Giant Sand has a reissue of Chore of Enchantment and there’s a tribute out there for Ian Dury.
Ladies night today! First 40 minutes is nothing but ladies… Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss from Sleater Kinney have a fresh, new band called Wild Flag. Self title album is out on Merge. Singer songwriters Pieta Brown and Ana Egge are also here with interesting albums. Egge’s new record is called Bad Blood and it’s apparently based around the mental problems that run in her family. The Walkabouts are also back after six years with the new record which they call Travels In The Dustland. Chris Eckman lives in Slovenia these days and he organized a very interesting tribute to Bob Dylan together with a group of local musicians. We represent this album today with Severa Gjurin and her version of Not Dark Yet from Bob’s later period. The show closes with two boys from across the pond. The new name for us is Danny George Wilson and his band The Champions of The World. Springsteen fans should pay attention. Laz McCluskey from Bubblegum Lemonade is working on the new record and testing the pulse of the audience by sharing some early demos. We check out one of those demos today.
And… we’re back from our usual Summer break. The break was long, but without huge shakes in musical world. Also, not too many great records happened in the past two months while we were gone. My favorite record this summer is definitely Rainer Ptacek session with Calexico members that came out now, but it was recorded way back in 1997, mere months before Rainer passed away. The cd is called Roll Back The Years, and I really wish I could. We lost a lot when Rainer left 14 years ago. From Austin, we have new records for The Krayolas and John Wesley Coleman. From Memphis, we have new records for Jack Oblivian and Bo-Keys. We also have new Brian Wilson, whose new record is centered around Disney movies.
It’s my father’s birthday and I am in my home town. My dad collects music just like I do and I learned a lot from him. So, two of us decided to make a show together. He picked all songs in today’s show. He’s an expert in early rock’n’roll and today’s selection are songs that represent an early history of this musical genre. People typically think that rock’n’roll was created with the first records of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Bill Halley in 1954 or so. However, rock’n’roll evolved very slowly and the term is mentioned as early as 1934! This hour is dedicated to these forefathers (and mothers) of the music that we all like so much. So, dwell into this history and wish my dad Ivica a happy birthday!
