Pieta BrownToday is the 10 year anniversary of what I think was probably the best show I ever put on air. That Saturday morning, as a tip of my friend Badger, we had a singer songwriter from Hammon, LA Damien Youth who is a local and underground legend who is putting out self released tapes and cd-rs since the 80s. He played a live set and also selected a number of songs from his musical collection. Today we revisit parts of that show and also check up with Damien and hear his two fresh songs that he sent to us. As a bonus, we also have a brand new song for Zane Armstrong, Damien’s songwriting partner.

Talking about the do-it-yourself geniuses, we also have a brand new song for R. Stevie Moore. He joined forces with Ariel Pink for the new tunes. Also, we have Stereo Soul Fire from Boston for the first time at the show, as well as Jonathan Wilson from Los Angeles. He has an album with an old Gordon Lightfoot tune on it, which is interesting, because The Krayolas also have a tune about Lightfoot on their new album. We also have new tune by Giant Sand which is about to show up on the forthcoming album Luz De Vida – a benefit for the victims of the Tucson shootout that happened on January 8 2011. The Residents also have a new album, so if you want to hear the only playlist ever which transitions from The Residents to Gordon Lightfoot – you’re at the right place.

Disciplina Kičme – Ako ti je glasno…;
The Residents – Once I Went To Barstow;
Sir Douglas Quintet – It Didn’t Even Bring Me Down;

Rainer PtacekAnd… we’re back from our usual Summer break. The break was long, but without huge shakes in musical world. Also, not too many great records happened in the past two months while we were gone. My favorite record this summer is definitely Rainer Ptacek session with Calexico members that came out now, but it was recorded way back in 1997, mere months before Rainer passed away. The cd is called Roll Back The Years, and I really wish I could. We lost a lot when Rainer left 14 years ago. From Austin, we have new records for The Krayolas and John Wesley Coleman. From Memphis, we have new records for Jack Oblivian and Bo-Keys. We also have new Brian Wilson, whose new record is centered around Disney movies.

In other news, we say goodbye to Zagreb’s Radio SC. The “flashlite” edition of The Little Lighthouse, that is, Internet edition recorded in my room, as opposed to being live in real radio studio, started back in 2008 on their initiative. I am thankful for bringing me back out into the public, but last spring I got a note from them that their funds got shortened and that the radio ceased to exist. All the best to their crew in future endeavors. In the mean time, we keep rocking the (un)free world on this website, and also in Kragujevac on Radio Centar and Athens on Rock XS.

9. Krayolas – Long Leaf Pine

KrayolasTexmex rock’n’roll attraction from Austin, Krayolas is no stranger to power pop and roots rock. All these musical threads coexist interleaved in their sonic tapestry. Long Leaf Pine follows up their album La Conquistadora from last year and it definitely helps that one of the notable guests on the record is legendary Augie Mayer, Sir Douglas’ keyboardist. Perhaps the best example on what Krayolas are capable of pulling out is the second song on this LP, Corrido Twelve Heads In A Bag, a cinematic story of a drug cartel battle on the border with Mexico. Rock’n’roll has always been a bold mixture of traditional American genres and Long Leaf Pine is more than a respectable representative in that sense.

Duane Jarvis Today’s show is dedicated to Duane Jarvis, singer, songwriter and session musician based in Los Angeles. He died from colon cancer on April 1st this year at only 51. Another dedication goes to the students of Zagreb who are protesting against new tuition fees over there. Buddy and Julie Miller are for the first time at The Little Lighthouse with their new album Written in Chalk. The Velvematics is a new power-pop name from Akron. Krayolas are back with a brand new album Long Leaf Pine. It’s my favorite album of the season, so look out, I’ll be reviewing it soon.
