Mike Watt is a rock’n’roll sailor and now his in the boat with two Italian fratello’s Andrea Belfi and Stefano Pilia. Their band Il Sogno Del Marinaio has a new record out called Canto Secondo and they are about to embark on a big American tour. Before you catch them in your town, here they are at the Little Lighthouse. Talking about Italians, there’s a new band out from over there called Sultan’s Bathery. They were also on the tour in the ol’ US of A just recently. John Mayall has a new record and since we’re at the letter M in our Blues Alphabet, it’s the right time to spend some airtime on this great British bluesman. John Doe has a new best off record and it also contains two brand new songs. We feature one of them today. Also, somehow the news of Peter Banks passing away escaped me last year, so we pay a little tribute to the legendary guitarist of Syn, Yes and Flash.

In today’s show we have the new music from the hard rock band Radio Moscow from Iowa and we introduce the new band from the Medway area, The Galileo 7. John Hiatt is back with an excellent new algum called Terms of My Surrender. Also, Mark Lanegan is preparing a new record with his band, and as an advance, a new single and a live recording came out recently. Janiva Magness is an excellent blues rock singer who just recently decided to make an album of original material for her own label. In some ways, this is her most personal album ever, titled simply Original. Also, we jump to the letter “W” in our regular segment called Blues Alphabet because the news comes to us that Johnny Winter passed away on July 16 this year.
This is one devastating month for the world of music. We lost some of the really great ones recently. Tommy Ramone is the most recent one, until now, the only remaining original Ramone, writer of Blitzkrieg Bop and producer of The Replacements Tim. His most recent musical effort was a bluegrass duet Uncle Monk, and one touching song which I recorded live in Cleveland from that era finishes our show. We also review some of my favorite Gerry Goffin and Carole King songs. Goffin passed away and left behind an incredible pioneering work in rock’n’roll lyricism. Bobby Womack, who was born in Cleveland OH by the way, also passed away last month. Rock’n’roll audience probably knows him the best as the author of the Rolling Stones first no.1 hit It’s All Over Now, but he was also a great singer in his own right. The we say goodbye to two great jazz bassists. Charlie Haden was definitely one of the greatest in the world. Incredible list of collaborators will never be surpassed. For instance, we check out his most recent album with Keith Jarrett called The Last Dance. It came just one month before the news came about Haden’s departure. MiÅ¡a Blam is the second bassist that passed away recently. He is not very well known outside of the borders of former Yugoslavia, but back home, he was regarded as the greatest one. And finally we also mention the passing of Paul Mazursky, definitely one of my favorite movie directors.
In our new show, we introduce singer songwriter Chuck Ragan, from Florida, with his new record Till Midnight. He writes in a more traditional format and another new name, Bart Davenport writes catchy power-pop tunes. He comes from Oakland, CA, and has quite a following in Spain. From Australia, we check out Nervous Trend and in London, Vacilando 68 record label sends us Piper’s Son. Black Math Horseman appeared on the Nirvana tribute In Utero, In Tribute, In Entirety, but in the mean time they managed to break up. In the end, we finish off with Scruffy The Cat, which was a cool 80s college rock band from Boston. Their singer Charlie Chesterman passed away on November 4th last year, and we pay a tribute to him.
Today’s show is dedicated to Larry Ramos, the singer who was a part of The Association, starting with their third album Insight Out. He passed away last week. We remember him with two tunes, but we also celebrate some new music as well. We introduce The Record Company, a band from Los Angeles. On the other band, in Brooklyn NYC we have a new really fun band called Screamin’ Rebel Angels. Greg Oblivian’s Reigning Sound have a new single. Los Puchos is a new name from Phoenix AZ. They put their music out exclusively on cassette tapes. Tame Impala have a new live LP. We also check out two recent LPs by Brimstone Howl. They were a great band from Omaha who broke up some 7 years ago, but before they split, they recorded two albums. One back home in Omaha and the other one in Detroit with Jim Diamond. Those albums were shelved and waited until recently only to show up in limited edition vinyl. John Ziegler, vocalist from that band also has a new band called The Lupines.
Today we say goodbye to Jesse Winchester, a wonderful singer songwriter from the South, who moved to Canada in the late sixties to avoid being drafter to Vietnam war. After that he recorded some of the greatest records in the seventies, with songs which were full of sorrow, nostalgia and longing for his homeland. He passed away on April 11 this year. Besides a tribute to Jesse, we also play some new music. Jim Lauderdale has a new record with songs co-written with Robert Hunter. Paul Starling is another new singer songwriter from LA area. The Singles from Detroit are back as a duet. Baseball Project super-group is also back with another record based around baseball themes. Left Lane Cruiser had a great albu last year called Rock The Back To Hell and now a record that compiles their earliest recordings is also out. Also, check out a really cool, rare live appearance of Harlan T. Bobo’s The Fuzz recorded last week in Cleveland.
We have a very quiet show today. Gavin Gardner from Toronto opens up with a Dylan tune. Then we go to New York and hear Lucius perform one of Bob’s songs from the 80s. We also check out a shoegazer band Creepoid from Philadelphia. Allysen Callery is a new name here at the Little Lighthouse. She mainly accompanies herself on guitar and has a very interesting voice, sounding a lot like Sandy Denny. We check out Marianne Dissard’s new record and we find her now back in France after being in Tucson for awhile. Carla Bozulich is back with the new record. And despite this being a very quiet episode of the Little Lighthouse, we close with the loudest record ever recorded – Stooges’ Raw Power. This our tribute to Scott Asheton, drummer of the Stooges who passed away last week.
Today we have a Velvet Underground tour de force. Death of Samantha play a cover of Rock And Roll in our Live in Cleveland segment, Danny And The Darlean’s play a pre-Velvet Lou Reed tune You’re Driving Me Insane. Also Natural Child participated in the Burger Records tribute to White Light White Heat. That album also saw a deluxe reissue with a lot of previously unreleased material, so we check out one of the songs. Talking about Natural Child, they also have a new record Dancing With The Wolves, which is about to come out. Other good new stuff come from The Cry!. We also check out The Moldes from Peru.
We start off rocking out to the new band from Japan called The Novice. They have a new single out on Dirtnap Records. Then we move on to an old Kansas power pop band called The Tunes. Their material is recently reissued on an LP called Love Uncool on Cheap Rewards. Plastic Pals from Sweden have an excellent new single and Pat Todd of the Lazy Cowgirls fame is back with the new band called The Rankoutsiders and the album 14th and Nowhere is a sweaty rock’n’roll record. We have some news from The Gories headquarters. Their old bootleg The Shaw Tapes saw a proper release on Third Man Records and their guitar player Dan Kroha has a new band Danny and The Darleans. We also have some news from the Yugosphere. Partibrejkers from Belgrade are back with the new single and Overflow from Koprivnica have a new record which features Mihovil Pavlek MiÅ¡kina’s. MiÅ¡kina was killed in a concentration camp 70 years ago. Jimmy Haber is a new name from the power-pop scene in Australia. His new album New Bondi Hippies has some catchy tunes spiced up with politically conscientious lyrics. Doug Paisley is a singer songwriter from Canada. A lot of people talk about him these days. What I find particularly interesting is that he pulled out of darkness reclusive Canadian singer Mary Margaret O’Hara who has a significant space on his new record. She had a landmark album back in the 80s called Miss America.
Today’s show is full of new names from all over the world. We have garage rock Liquor Store from Plauderville NJ and havy rock from Tumbleweed in Australia. Radio Days come from Milan in Italy and play power pop. From the Balkans we have two bands that play instrumental music. Fish in Oil are a jazz band from Belgrade (who occasionally rocks) and Dirty Fuse are a surfing the Aegean sea over in Athens Greece. Hozac records published a nice reissue of a new wave band called Epicycle over in Chicago. And finally, we pay respect to Pete Seeger. In fact, the entire show today is dedicated to this great folk musician who we lost at the age of 94 just a few days ago.
