Hal DavidThe Dirtbombs from Detroit joined forces with Dan Sartain and Terrible Twos for a new ep release and they cover another act from Detroit on that single – a cult band called Death. Quartet from Pittsburgh, PA Satin Gum are back with their second album, which they call LP2. Mark Eitzel and Rickie Lee Jones have new solo records out. And Crusaders of Love is a new name today, from Lille in France.

In the end, we’re paying respect to Hal David, a lyricists that used to work with Burt Bacharach. Our tribute is not obvious, as we play some versions of his songs that are not notorious, so that should be interesting.

3. Satin Gum

Satin GumSatin Gum is a new band from Pittsburgh who surprised us early in 2009 with a neat four track EP. Later in the year this EP was expanded into a nine track LP and here it taking a high third position in our year end list. This record combines several very interesting rock moments into one thing. You will hear shoe-gazing guitar riffs of My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr, Nirvana pathos and Cheap Trick lighthearted humor. Simple record that economically clocks out at 26 minutes will stay long in your player on repeat. We can only hope that this band will eventually leave the confounds of their local scene. Let it be noted that the neighboring Cleveland was the second stop on that journey!

Cleveland’s own blues man Derek DePrator is also back with a new record and a new cassette tape with exciting self-titled collection of instrumentals. Satin GumThe 2009 didn’t start right. Reboot please! They year barely started and we lost Ron Asheton, the legendary guitar player of The Stooges. Definitely one of the most influential “shredders” around. Dave Dee of Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich also left this ugly world. This former policeman was patroling when Eddy Cochran died in his car crash and had later on a few big hits with his band. Songs Band It! and Zabadak! are forgotten now, but back when I was a small kid, these two were my favorites. Besides our tributes to Dave Dee and Ron Asheton, we also have some new tunes. Satin Gum is a promising new band from Pittsburgh PA with influences in the melodic grunge. Variety Show is a duet from Chicago with a rich songwriting talent. We also have two ladies, Heather Waters, who was Delbert McClinton’s protege. We also have Jenny Scheinman for the first time, although her CD is almost a year old now. But it’s never too late for rock’n’roll!

Alejandro Escovedo – I Got A Right;
The Stooges – I Got a Right;
The Stooges – No Fun;
The Stooges – Loose;
The Stooges – Raw power;
Partibrejkers – Veceras;
Heather Waters – Wherever You Go;
Jenny Scheinman – Come On Down;
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich – Hold Tight;
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich – Bend It;
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich – Zabadak!;
Satin Gum – … Naming Our Kids After Ikea Products;
Variety Show – Mary Doesn’t Need You Anymore;
Elektricni Orgazam – Vi;
